This study based on the Five Factor Model of Costa and McCrae (1987) sought to determine theninternal consistency and the psychometric properties of the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) of Gosling, Rentfrow, & Swann (2003), Lima and Castro (2009) Portuguese version. The sample consisted of 170 male soccer athletes whose average age stood at 18.50 years, with a minimum of 13 and a maximum of 33 years. Statistical analysis was performed by the Statistical Software Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) in its 19 version for Windows. The TIPI showed low internal consistency (=0.462) and factor analysis that meets the criteria postulated by the instrument authors, so considered it valid to evaluate the personality rapidly in samples with little time available, for example elite athletes.
One of the most studied topics nowadays, from psychology in general, and from sport psychology, is anxiety. In fact, research on anxiety has been approached from various theoretical perspectives ranging from psychoanalysis, behaviorism, or more recently, those theories that take into consideration the importance of affective, rational, and emotional processes. The aim of this study is to analyze the levels of anxiety and emotional intelligence, and their relationship. The sample is composed of 165 university physical education students with a mean age of 20.33 years (SD = 3.44), (70.9% male and 27.9% female). We used the CSAI-2 questionnaire (to measure cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and self-confidence), and the TMMS-24 (to measure emotional intelligence). The main findings of this research highlighted the presence of significant correlations between emotional clarity and emotional regulation, self-confidence, cognitive anxiety, and somatic anxiety. Therefore, we conclude that sporting performance is influenced by various variables of different kinds, including emotions, and highlight the importance of the incorporation of the emotional component in the field of sport.
It was intended to evaluate de psychometric properties of Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS24), Portuguese version of Queiroz et al. (2005) in 170 athletes, male gender sample. Statistical analysis was performed through the software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 for Windows. We proceeded to the analysis of the reliability of the 24 items of the instrument in order to see if the items were to measure the construct and obtain a high internal consistency (α = 0.890), almost unchanged with the elimination of any item. The inter-item correlation was not as strong, confirming the analysis of alpha. However, the items in each category tend to have a stronger relation/correlation with each other, between categories. We conducted factor analysis, and variability between the variables, so as to reduce them to a particular number of dimensions. Initially we observed a six-dimensional division, but we forced the analysis to only three resulting in a division of the items according to the original scale, Thus, we concluded that the TMMS24 has a high internal consistency, good reliability and validity, offering us a suitable and reliable tool which we can conduct investigations in different areas such as the sports universe.
