El trasplante de médula ósea, que también se conoce como trasplante de células madres, se suele usar para tratar diferentes tipos de enfermedades que se relacionan con el sistema hematopoyético, con la finalidad de poder recuperar la función completa de la médula ósea. Las células madres se pueden encontrar a nivel de sangre del cordón umbilical y en la placenta, de donde se extraerán y se van a criopreservar en bancos, en donde se van a almacenar hasta que el paciente necesite de ellos. El antígeno CD34 + tiene una alta relación con las células madres hematopoyéticas, que se va a expresar en las fases iniciales de la diferenciación sanguínea. Su relación con las células progenitoras hematopoyéticas y su alcance que tiene para llegar a médula ósea, posterior al trasplante de médula ósea; se puede determinar que hacer un recuento del antígeno CD34 + puede dar un panorama de cómo se está dando el proceso posterior del trasplante.
