O livro Reformas universitárias -Avaliação Institucional Participativa de Denise Leite, inserido na Coleção Universit@s, traz uma oportuna contribuição aos estudos na área da avaliação referente à educação superior, especificamente à avaliação institucional.Enquanto especialista e pesquisadora da área, a autora expõe o tema Avaliação Institucional Participativa aproximando teoria e prática, propiciando uma discussão consistente, no momento em que as universidades se envolvem com o novo processo de avaliação do Sistema Nacional da Avaliação da Educação Superior (SINAES).A obra está dividida em duas partes e compõe ao todo sete capítulos que marcam a amplitude da avaliação institucional participativa.O primeiro capítulo intitulado "Inovação, mudanças e reformas" analisa as contradições da função da universidade brasileira, que, em tempos de mudança, evocam idéias de inovação, visualizando a universidade como "instituição antecipatória" que busca, através das reformas e do seu autoconhecimento (referente a suas produções, seus processos e objetivos), projetar-se para o futuro. A opção pela inovação implica optar pela idéia de qualidade institucional, não como "um ente abstrato", mas resultante da eliminação de paradigmas que sustentam um modelo mercadológico e empresarial, especialmente o da qualidade total. A relação avaliação e a democracia considerada, na Avaliação Participativa (AP), conduz a um exercício de práticas internas nas universidades, com fins de reforma e transformação que atenda, além da qualidade, a pertinência social permeada por princípios engendrados por uma radical democracia.No segundo capítulo "Formatos de avaliação e suas concepções" é apresentada a discussão da avaliação nas universidades. A autora mostra a necessidade do conhecimento das concepções das formas de avaliação, bem como dos princípios que sustentam os modelos ou enfoques avaliativos.
