Resumo: Em 1726 Francisco Mendes de Goes foi nomeado agente na corte parisiense por dom João V para desempenhar a função de encomendeiro do rei, sendo atribuída a missão de gestor das encomendas feitas pela família real. Utilizaremos, neste artigo, dois conjuntos documentais que acabam por revelar a atribulada estadia de Mendes de Goes. As cartas enviadas ao cardeal da Mota revelam as dificuldades enfrentadas para conseguir responder ao volume de encomendas vindas da monarquia portuguesa. O outro conjunto documental revela que também membros da aristocracia portuguesa sobrecarregaram o agente com encomendas pessoais. Neste conjunto documental o teor das encomendas permite-nos vislumbrar aspetos da cultura material, assim como as relações de sociabilidade estabelecidas por Mendes de Goes. Ambos revelam novas facetas da carreira diplomática que, até então, têm sido pouco exploradas na história da diplomacia.
Neste artigo, serão apresentados alguns aspectos da trajetória de José da Cunha Brochado, um dos mais proeminentes indivíduos do cenário político da história de Portugal nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Iniciou seu percurso no palco das relações internacionais na qualidade de secretário de embaixada de d. Luís Álvares de Castro, segundo marquês de Cascais entre 1695-1704 em Paris. Em suas cartas e memórias, Brochado revelou não somente aspectos relacionados com a vida na corte, mas com o comportamento adotado por d. Luís Álvares de Castro. Percebe-se que a estada nas cortes europeias demandava não somente conhecimento político, mas também habilidade para circular nos mais diferentes ambientes e conviver com hábitos sociais e culturais bastante distintos, características essas que Brochado acreditava ter. RESUMO A relação dos usos e costumes que dizem respeito à cultura material, na sociedade portuguesa do século XVIII, vem sendo analisada por investigadores que utilizam uma variada panóplia de documentos, os quais lhes permitem visualizar a vida na corte lisboeta. As correspondências de membros do corpo diplomático têm revelado aspectos interessantes do seu dia a dia. Neste artigo, analisaremos as cartas enviadas de Lisboa a Paris, que consistiram em listas de encomendas feitas por D. Maria I. Os interlocutores são João António Pinto da Silva, o moço da Câmara de Guarda-Roupas e Guarda-Joias, e D. Vicente Coutinho, embaixador na corte parisiense. A diversidade de objetos constantes nas listas, a minúcia das descrições e a preocupação do embaixador em atingir as expectativas da rainha permitem, assim, que seja revelada não somente a circulação material, como a própria cultura material da época.
