The scope of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of the elderly about syphilis and AIDS before and after conducting educational activities. Fifty-five individuals participating in a convenience group from territory of Terrenos Novos in Sobral in the State of Ceará were selected. To collect the data, a semi-structured questionnaire about HIV/AIDS and syphilis was used, including general features and information about concept, transmission, prevention, vulnerability and treatment. The questionnaire was applied before and after the implementation of educational workshops about AIDS and syphilis. Among those surveyed, 96.4% were aware about AIDS and 67.3% did not know about syphilis. However, 38.1% believed that a kiss on the mouth and 78.1% that mosquito bites were means of HIV transmission. 70.9% did not know the mode of transmission of syphilis. After the workshops the indexes changed positively. Data analysis revealed gaps in knowledge of this group about the concept, transmission and treatment of these diseases. Educational interventions were effective for knowledge assimilation.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar o perfil epidemiológico dos pacientes portadores de carcinoma espinocelular de boca, atendidos na Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Fortaleza-CE, de 1999 a 2005. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, descritivo, a partir de informações secundárias. A população pesquisada foi de 225 casos. As informações foram coletadas nos livros de registros das cirurgias de cabeça e pescoço e nos prontuários dos pacientes da Santa Casa. Foram pesquisadas as variáveis: idade, sexo, procedência do paciente, estadiamento clínico e patológico, localização anatômica e tratamento. Observou-se que 69,2% dos casos prevaleceram em homens, com idade variando de 26 a 98 anos. Os sítios mais acometidos foram assoalho de boca (22,7%) e língua (21,8%). Sobre o estadiamento, 52,4% dos pacientes apresentaram-se em estágios III ou IV, sendo 40% com metástase regional. Cirurgia associada à radioterapia foi o tratamento mais realizado (57,2%). Encontrou-se relação estatisticamente significante (p<0,05) entre as variáveis sexo e idade, entre sexo e local acometido, e deste com idade. Os resultados sugerem a necessidade de implantação de uma política de prevenção e controle do câncer bucal no Estado do Ceará, no sentido de viabilizar a redução no número de novos casos, diagnóstico precoce e melhor prognóstico, e tratamento dessas neoplasias.

Objetivo: avaliar a condição de saúde bucal de pacientes com hanseníase no município de Sobral, estado do Ceará, Brasil. Métodos: estudo transversal, contemplando levantamento epidemiológico da saúde bucal e entrevista com 65 pacientes portadores de hanseníase; as variáveis pesquisadas foram (i) condições de saúde bucal, (ii) dados socioeconômicos, (iii) utilização de serviços odontológicos e (iv) percepção da relação entre doença e saúde bucal. Resultados: a maioria dos pacientes (n=47) possuía baixa escolaridade e não foi orientada a procurar o serviço odontológico no momento do diagnóstico da doença (n=44); 10 responderam sentir alguma dificuldade na escovação bucal, devida à dormência nos membros superiores; verificou-se associação significativa entre episódios reacionais e sangramento gengival (p=0,010), classificação operatória (p=0,001) e procura do serviço odontológico (p=0,001). Conclusão: o acompanhamento odontológico dos pacientes com hanseníase é importante para reduzir os focos de infecção da doença.

The Brazilian initiatives that propose to contribute to redirecting training and the care model led us to describe the experience of deploying of the Education for Work Program (PET) -Health/Health Surveillance (HS) in Sobral, northeastern Brazil. This is a descriptive, experience-reporting study, experienced by nursing students at the Vale do Acaraú State University (UVA) and medicine and dentistry students at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), tutors, and PET-Health/HS preceptors. The information was recorded by the tutors and preceptors during the activities undertaken ever since the program was deployed (July 2010). The work process performed under PET-Health/HS comprises three intercommunicating structural axes, consisting of theoretical and conceptual experiences, experiences in service, and research experiences. To ensure the interface between teaching and service and integration between health surveillance and primary care, we built an educational 'technology' we call a permanent education in health surveillance technology. The experience afforded the students a broader view about the population's health conditions and on the importance of understanding local issues for health surveillance in order to provide qualified care targeted at the reality at each territory.

Background: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of severe periodontitis by three different case definitions.Methods: Patients aged >35 years (n = 243, mean age = 47.8 ± 9.3 years) were evaluated by periodontal examinations and classified in patients with severe periodontitis according to the case definition proposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP)-CDC/AAP, the new periodontal disease classification proposed jointly by the AAP and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP/AAP), and the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). The primary outcome was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of severe periodontitis between the three case definitions. Sensitivity (SS), specificity (SP), and area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to analyze the accuracy. Results: The proportion of subjects presenting the most severe definitions of each classification was: severe periodontitis (CDC/AAP) = 47.3%, type III and IV periodontitis (EFP/AAP) = 43.2% and CPI code 4 = 44.4%. When comparing the CDC/AAP case definitions with the EFP/AAP classification, SS, SP, and ROC of 81.7%, 91.4%, and 0.866 (CI, 95%: 0.816 to 0.916), respectively, were obtained. Similarly, when comparing CDC/AAP to CPI code 4, SS, SP, and ROC of 81.7%, 89.1%, and 0.854 (CI, 95%: 0.802 to 0.906), respectively, were obtained. When type III and IV periodontitis (EFP/AAP) was compared with CPI code 4, the values were 92.4%, 92%, and 0.922 (CI, 95%: 0.883 to 0.961), respectively. Conclusions: The EFP/AAP classification and the CPI demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy with the CDC/AAP case definition to diagnose severe periodontitis.
