Se presenta un resumen concentrado de la evolución histórica del sistema de drenaje de la zona metropolitana de la Ciudad de México (ZMCM). Esta información está dispersa y se ha recopilado de informes y documentos oficiales, cuyos mapas se han actualizado al presente. La situación del drenaje es objeto de constantes trabajos de mantenimiento y ampliación. A pesar de ello, la ciudad continúa sufriendo de constantes inundaciones, agravadas por su hundimiento progresivo, el aumento poblacional y los efectos del cambio climático. Gran parte de sus aguas negras son vertidas en el Valle del Mezquital, al sur del estado de Hidalgo, lo cual ha promovido el desarrollo de la agricultura en esa zona semidesértica, pero con un gran costo ambiental. En 2019, la Planta de Tratamiento de Aguas de Atotonilco de Tula inició operaciones y el agua de riego cumple las normas mexicanas.
