Hay distintas formas de acercarse a un libro o de dejar que un libro se acerque a uno. Nuestra relación con los objetos está atravesada por una miríada de relaciones previas que coinciden en ese encuentro que podemos considerar o no fortuito de acuerdo al prisma de percepciones que nos conforman. Al mismo tiempo, la lectura es ese espacio privilegiado de interacción donde convergen tiempos y espacios variados que nos permiten habitarlos por su intermedio. Así y para dar cuenta de lo que considero sencillamente como un recorrido propio por entre las calles y los lugares señalados por las palabras de un autor, quisiera empezar diciendo que un libro sobre el Paraguay es siempre una invitación novedosa. Este hecho, que de ser necesario podría ser estadísticamente comprobable, no resulta menor y es contemplado como tal por Maximiliano von Thüngen, quien avezándose en tierras ignotas nos habilita no solamente sus cuadernos de campo, sino, desde el inicio y sin ambages, las sorpresas que un campo nuevo, que el autor describe como "pequeño universo", depara a la extranjería.Efectivamente, el Paraguay se constituye, ya desde su ubicación geográfica, como un paraje poco visitado y menos conocido en el concierto regional e internacional. Históricamente esta situación ha ido consolidándose casi como un rasgo identitario, una fama historiográficamente preservada y literariamente expandida, como si de alguna manera, las reducciones en cuestión hubieran extendido su misterio, asociado al nombre del país desde muy temprano. Me resulta fácil imaginar que con este mapa en mano, el viaje que el autor nos propone nos conducirá necesariamente a algún otro lugar que el establecido en la hoja de ruta.El libro nos ofrece de entrada una visita a las ruinas de los antiguos pueblos guaraníes gobernados por la orden jesuita que conforman hoy en día parte de un circuito turístico regional bien señalizado. La primera parte del libro nos ubica en el paisaje del que da cuenta. Para ello ofrece una perspectiva general pero detallada del inicio de los pueblos en cuestión, de su cotidiano y sus particularidades tanto históricas como geográficas, sociales, culturales, políticas y económicas, en interacción con el contexto de la región y de ultramar. "Fue más bien el éxito económico de las reducciones, su elevado número de habitantes, el privilegiado estatus del que gozaron dentro del esquema colonial, el entrenamiento militar que recibieron en ella los indígenas, la calidad de las obras de arte confeccionadas en sus talleres, la construcción de imponentes conjuntos arquitectónicos y -quizás sobre todo-las apasionadas polémicas en las que se vio envuelta la Compañía desde sus orígenes, lo que potenció su fama mundial y las instaló como un tema candente en la opinión pública de las sociedades americanas y europeas de la época" (p. 32).Posteriormente, el autor reconstruye de manera amena las complejidades de la patrimonialización de estos sitios, lo que introduce tempranamente en el relato las
