BackgroundThe Tehuacán Valley, Mexico is a region with exceptionally high biocultural richness. Traditional knowledge in this region comprises information on nearly 1,600 plant species used by local peoples to satisfy their subsistence needs. Plant resources with higher cultural value are interchanged in traditional markets. We inventoried the edible plant species interchanged in regional markets documenting economic, cultural and ecological data and about their extraction and management in order to: (1) assess how commercialization and ecological aspects influence plant management, (2) identify which species are more vulnerable, and (3) analyze how local management contributes to decrease their risk. We hypothesized that scarcer plant species with higher economic value would be under higher pressure motivating more management actions than on more abundant plants with lower economic value. However, construction of management techniques is also influenced by the time-span the management responses have taken as well as biological and ecological aspects of the plant species that limit the implementation of management practices. Plant management mitigates risk, but its absence on plant species under high risk may favor local extinction.MethodsSix traditional markets were studied through 332 semi-structured interviews to local vendors about barter, commercialization, and management types of local edible plant species. We retrieved ethnobotanical information on plant management from ten communities in a workshop and sampled regional vegetation in a total of 98 sites to estimate distribution and abundance of plant species commercialized. Through Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) we analyzed the amount of variation of management types that can be explained from socioeconomic and ecological information. A risk index was calculated relating distribution, abundance, economic value and management of plant resources to identify the most vulnerable species.ResultsWe recorded 122 edible plant species interchanged in the main regional markets. CCA explained significantly 24% of management variation, spatial distribution and plant parts used being particularly important in management decisions. The indeterminate 76% of variation suggests that management decisions depend on particular variables that are not explained by the ecological and socioeconomic factors studied and/or their high variation in the context at the regional scale. The risk index indicated that management was the factor that mostly influences decreasing of risk of interchanged plant species. We identified Clinopodium mexicanum, Pachycereus weberi, Dasylirion serratifolium, Disocorea sp., Ceiba aesculifolia, Neobuxbamia tetetzo, Lippia graveolens, Litsea glaucescens, L. neesiana, Jatropha neopauciflora, Agave potatorum and other agave species used for producing mescal among the more endangered plant species due to human pressure, their relative scarcity and limited or inexistent management.ConclusionSpatial distribution and plant parts used are particularly ...
Aerodynamic database reconstruction via gappy high order singular value decompositionby Ana Isabel MORENO LÓPEZ A method based on an iterative application of high order singular value decomposition is derived for the reconstruction of missing data in multidimensional databases. The method is inspired by a seminal gappy reconstruction method for two-dimensional databases invented by Everson and Sirovich (1995) and improved by Beckers and Rixen (2003) and Venturi and Karniadakis (2004). In addition, the method is adapted to treat both noisy and structured-but-nonrectangular databases.The method is calibrated and illustrated using a three-dimensional toy model database that is obtained by discretizing a transcendental function. The performance of the method is tested on three aerodynamic databases for the flow past a wing, one obtained by a semi-analytical method, and two resulting from computational fluid dynamics. The method is finally applied to an experimental database consisting in a non-exhaustive parameter space measurement of forces for a box-wing configuration.iii
ResumenReconstrucción de bases de datos aerodinámicas a través de la descomposición en valores sigulares para tensores de alto orden por Ana Isabel MORENO LÓPEZ Esta Tesis se centra en el desarrollo de un método para la reconstrucción de bases de datos experimentales incompletas de más de dos dimensiones. Como idea general, consiste en la aplicación iterativa de la descomposición en valores singulares de alto orden sobre la base de datos incompleta. Este nuevo método se inspira en el que ha servido de base para la reconstrucción de huecos en bases de datos bidimensionales inventado por Everson y Sirovich (1995) que a su vez, ha sido mejorado por Beckers y Rixen (2003) y simultáneamente por Venturi y Karniadakis (2004). Además, se ha previsto la adaptación de este nuevo método para tratar el posible ruido característico de bases de datos experimentales y a su vez, bases de datos estructuradas cuya información no forma un hiperrectángulo perfecto.Se usará una base de datos tridimensional de muestra como modelo, obtenida a través de una función transcendental, para calibrar e ilustrar el método. A continuación se detalla un exhaustivo estudio del funcionamiento del método y sus variantes para distintas bases de datos aerodinámicas. En concreto, se usarán tres bases de datos tridimensionales que contienen la distribución de presiones sobre un ala. Una se ha generado a través de un método semi-analítico con la intención de estudiar distintos tipos de discretizaciones espaciales. El resto resultan de dos modelos numéricos calculados en CFD. Porúltimo, el método se aplica a una base de datos experimental de más de tres dimensiones que contiene la medida de fuerzas de una configuración ala de Prandtl obtenida de una campaña de ensayos en túnel de viento, donde se estudiaba un amplio espacio de parámetros geométricos de la configuración que como resultado ha generado una base de datos donde la información está dispersa.v
This paper presents the teaching innovation project AUDIOSUB, which aimed at assessing the didactic potential of audio description (AD) and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) in foreign language education. Within an online setting, 25 undergraduates of English Studies in a Spanish university worked collaboratively for two months and a half, in groups of five, so as to provide accessibility to complete short films. To that end, they were provided with a number of ad hoc tutorials and guidelines on technical issues related to AD and SDH, the two media accessibility modes used for this proposal. A pre-experiment was designed for data collection: pre- and post- writing and oral production tests, as well as general translation pre- and post- tests, were administered, and quantitative data were exploited using SPSS; pre-and post- questionnaires and observation were also used to triangulate and complement the analysis. The results show evidence of improvement both in written production and in general translation skills thanks to the pedagogical application of media accessibility and point towards a more systematic exploitation of didactic SDH and AD in the foreign language learning context.
