Zdravstvena pismenost podrazumijeva sposobnost razumijevanja i pravilnoga korištenja informacija u svrhu unapređenja vlastitoga zdravlja. Povezanosti zdravstvene pismenosti i zdravstvenoga stanja dobro je poznata i opisana. Praksa nedvojbeno ukazuje na sinkronicitet razine zdravstvene pismenosti, adherencije, zdravstvenih ishoda i zdravlja općenito. Osobe slabije zdravstvene pismenosti osjećaju duboko ukorijenjeni sram i strah, a to ih dovodi u poziciju povećanoga zdravstvenog rizika.
