Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative disorder with an imminent risk of blindness, in cases where early diagnosis and treatment are not performed. The doctors' constant motivation to give these fragile beings a chance at life with optimal visual acuity has never stopped, since Terry first described this condition. Thus, throughout time, several specific advancements have been made in the management of ROP. Apart from the most known risk factors, this narrative review brings to light the latest research about new potential risk factors, such as: proteinuria, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and blood transfusions. Digital imaging has revolutionized the management of retinal pathologies, and it is more and more used in identifying and staging ROP, particularly in the disadvantaged regions by the means of telescreening. Moreover, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and automated diagnostic tools based on deep learning offer new perspectives on the ROP diagnosis. The new therapeutical trend based on the use of anti-VEGF agents is increasingly used in the treatment of ROP patients, and recent research sustains the theory according to which these agents do not interfere with the neurodevelopment of premature babies.
An individual's behavior can be defined as a set of complex reactions of the body to internal and external stimuli. Case description: We present a case of a young adult student who, under the circumstances of an anomic environment, causes a female person multiple stab wounds to the cervical region. The patient has an addiction to virtual reality, personal psychiatric history of a depressive disorder, emotional and anxious behavioral disorders, as he was a regular cannabis user. The young man was attending an event where he was consuming alcohol and banned substances (Ecstasy), whose effect combined with antidepressants creates a virtual reality in which the individual has a particular mental state, having the impression that bystanders want to hurt him. Under the impulse of this state, the individual uses a bladed weapon and causes multiple wounds to the victim. The patient is examined in the psychiatric forensic examination commission to determine the discernment at the time of the act of violence and for recommendations regarding safety measures. Conclusion: The approach of hetero-aggression behaviour is based on three categories of causal factors, in a triune concept that implies the consequence of the interaction of the existential environment, with the personality structure of the young individual and with the circumstantial factors that precipitate the act.
Drug facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) can be defined as sexual activity occurring where consent is invalid or absent due to the effects of drugs and/or alcohol. We report a rare case of pro-active drug facilitated sexual assault involving non-oral administration of sedative-hypnotic intoxicant without primary alcoholic ingestion. For eight years, a male nurse administered sedative-hypnotic drugs to patients admitted to the hospital unit, in order to subsequently maintain sexual intercourse with them. The intravenous administration without primary alcoholic ingestion distinguishes this case of pro-active drug facilitated sexual assault from those presented in associated literature.
This paper presents a fully documented rare case of school bullying in which one of bullies has suffered traumatic injuries which were incompatible with life. The authors present judicial, social, clinical, morphological, somatic and mental medical data. The data from specialized literature of high scientific quality is analyzed, the aim being to improve the prediction and prophylaxis of the phenomenon.
To improve the outcome and quality of life for patients with head and neck carcinoma, an increasing amount of research has been performed on the particularities of this type of cancer and its treatment methods. Starting from clinical aspects, including histology and imaging features, up-to-date studies from different parts of the world have determined new data leading to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the disease and proposed new treatment protocols. The head and neck areas are predisposed to almost all skin neoplasms, most commonly those related to ultraviolet exposure. Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma account for almost 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers in this region; therefore, reviewing the literature on cutaneous carcinomas of the head and neck area and sharing particular aspects of their physiopathology are beneficial for a great number of patients. The paper presents an analysis of the management of hazardous chemical waste from medicolegal. activities. The analysis is based on eight years survey of the hazardous chemical waste management, ponting out the current procedures. The time series analysis is used to predict the evolution of such medical waste, and according to the forecast some strategic objective for reducing the amount of chemical waste are proposed.
Systemic changes often send signals to the skin, and certain neoplastic diseases of the internal organs can also trigger skin manifestations. In this article, the authors make clinical photography presentations of the patients seen at our clinic with dermatologic paraneoplastic syndromes within pharyngeal–esophageal malignancies, describe several paraneoplastic dermatoses, and also review high-quality scientific literature in order to be able to highlight the dermatological signs of pharyngoesophageal malignant tumors. The majority of our patients with paraneoplastic dermatoses, filtering for pharyngoesophageal malignancies, had esophageal neoplasms, out of whom seven were female and two were male, making esophageal cancer more common within the paraneoplastic dermatoses within pharyngoesophageal malignancies. An early recognition of paraneoplastic dermatoses can diagnose neoplasms and sequentially contribute to a better prognosis for the patient. This matter is also useful for front-line medical personnel in order to improve early diagnosis of the underlying malignancy, curative interventions with prompt therapy administration and good prognosis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
