OBJETIVO: Estudar o uso de benzodiazepínicos no tratamento de insônia; Determinar se há risco de intoxicação exógena ao uso indiscriminado; E investigar quais são os efeitos colaterais ao uso crônico. METODOLOGIA: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura baseada nas perguntas: 1. O uso indiscriminado de benzodiazepínicos para o tratamento de insônia apresenta risco de intoxicação exógena? 2. O uso crônico de benzodiazepínico apresenta efeitos colaterais? Os artigos selecionados atendem os critérios de elegibilidade: 1. Ser publicação nacional ou internacional; 2. Estar no período de 2012 a 2022; 3. Estar disponível de forma gratuita na íntegra. Excluíram-se os artigos que não responderam às perguntas científicas. Realizada a busca bibliográfica nas bases de dados eletrônicos Scielo, Google Acadêmico, PubMed e Mendeley no período de maio a junho de 2022. RESULTADOS: Nesta revisão foram incluídos 33 artigos. O uso a longo o prazo de benzodiazepínicos para o tratamento de insônia é crescente no país, principalmente quando se associa a quadros de ansiedade2,3, assim pacientes procuram e abusam da medicação para agir rapidamente em seus sintomas, desconhecendo as consequências do uso prolongado e indiscriminado5. Ademais, desconsideram que o uso crônico causa tolerância ao medicamento, necessitando de acréscimo às doses para apresentar o mesmo efeito6, ainda há o risco de ocorrer efeitos colaterais e dependência, sendo possível que a interrupção abrupta possa ocasionar síndrome de abstinência10. CONCLUSÃO: É de extrema necessidade que profissionais de saúde considerem preferencialmente o uso por curto período dessa classe e a prescrevam de forma restrita5, e considerem utilizar uma classe alternativa. Ainda, é preciso que orientem os pacientes quanto o uso indiscriminado apresentar um risco de efeitos adversos, intoxicação exógena e adicção ao fármaco5.
