La urbanización ha modificado los flujos y procesos económicos y demográficos dentro de las zonas urbanas y el estado de sus recursos naturales. El análisis de estas transformaciones demanda la generación de información relevante de los fenómenos ambientales de la unidad geográfica concentrada en técnicas de medición como los indicadores ambientales simples y sintéticos. La literatura especializada sugiere que una menor escala territorial de medición en estos indicadores es fundamental para alcanzar criterios de eficacia y eficiencia en la toma de decisiones. Este trabajo presenta una revisión del abordaje de indicadores ambientales simples y sintéticos como referentes para la construcción de indicadores de calidad ambiental urbana. Las conclusiones destacan un limitado consenso académico con respecto a los componentes de los indicadores de calidad ambiental urbana considerando la unicidad de las dinámicas y características medioambientales y económicas de las regiones urbanas, no obstante, pueden constituirse como un elemento para lograr mediciones desde la perspectiva de la sustentabilidad fuerte, lo que pone de manifiesto importantes líneas de investigación por desarrollar.
