Purpose:To study the components of long latency auditory evoked potentials and to compare data from these measures in students with and without learning disabilities. Methods: Thirty students, 15 with learning disorder (study group) and 15 typical without learning problems (control group), of both genders, aged 7-14 years, mean age 10 years.
Purpose: to characterize, compare and classify the performance of students from 2 nd to 5 th grades of private teaching according to the semiology of errors. Method: 115 students from the 2 nd to 5 th grades, 27 from the 2 nd grade, 30 students from the 3 rd and 4 th grades, and 28 from the 5 th grade divided into four groups, respectively, GI, GII, GIII and GIV, were evaluated. The tests of Spelling Evaluation Protocol -Pro-Orthography were divided into: collective version (writing letters of the alphabet, randomized dictation of letters, word dictation, non-word dictation, dictation with pictures, thematic writing induced by picture) and individual version (dictation of sentences, purposeful error, spelled dictation, spelling lexical memory). Results: there was a statistically significant difference in intergroup comparison indicating that there was an increase in average accuracy for all tests as for the individual and collective version. With the increase in grade level, the groups decreased the average of writing errors based on the semiology of errors. We found a higher frequency of natural spelling errors. Conclusion: data from this study showed that the increase in average accuracy according to grade level may be an indicative for normal development of student's writing in this population. The higher frequency of natural spelling errors found indicates that formal instruction on phoneme-grapheme correspondence may not be occurring, since that they are directly dependent on the learning of the rule of direct phoneme-grapheme correspondence.
This study provided a greater understanding of the central auditory pathways of children with and without ADHD when evaluated from electrophysiological tests.
Introduction The auditory system of HIV-positive children may have deficits at various levels, such as the high incidence of problems in the middle ear that can cause hearing loss. Objective The objective of this study is to characterize the development of children infected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the Simplified Auditory Processing Test (SAPT) and the Staggered Spondaic Word Test. Methods We performed behavioral tests composed of the Simplified Auditory Processing Test and the Portuguese version of the Staggered Spondaic Word Test (SSW). The participants were 15 children infected by HIV, all using antiretroviral medication. Results The children had abnormal auditory processing verified by Simplified Auditory Processing Test and the Portuguese version of SSW. In the Simplified Auditory Processing Test, 60% of the children presented hearing impairment. In the SAPT, the memory test for verbal sounds showed more errors (53.33%); whereas in SSW, 86.67% of the children showed deficiencies indicating deficit in figure-ground, attention, and memory auditory skills. Furthermore, there are more errors in conditions of background noise in both age groups, where most errors were in the left ear in the Group of 8-year-olds, with similar results for the group aged 9 years. Conclusion The high incidence of hearing loss in children with HIV and comorbidity with several biological and environmental factors indicate the need for: 1) familiar and professional awareness of the impact on auditory alteration on the developing and learning of the children with HIV, and 2) access to educational plans and follow-up with multidisciplinary teams as early as possible to minimize the damage caused by auditory deficits.
Event-related potentials in clinical research: guidelines for eliciting, recording, and quantifying Mismatch Negativity, P300, and N400Potenciais relacionados a eventos em pesquisa clínica: diretrizes para eliciar, gravar, e quantificar o MMN, P300 e N400 Event-Related Potentials (ERP) refer to electrical responses generated by the thalamus, auditory cortex and cortical association areas and involve discrimination, integration and attention tasks. Furthermore, they consist of a series of positive and negative peaks which take place from 50 ms after the stimulus onset and can be useful in investigating neural mechanisms related to auditory perception (1,2)
