Fatos globais que desafiam a saúde pública, como a pandemia de COVID-19 e o envelhecimento populacional, requerem uma visão holística da aplicação das tecnologias 4.0 com novas práticas sociais. O objetivo desse artigo foi mapear o potencial da Indústria 4.0 na geração de inovação médica. Para tanto, desenvolveu-se um estudo exploratório e descritivo, de natureza aplicada e com uma abordagem quantitativa baseada na coleta e tratamento estatísticos de dados patentários para Brasil, EUA, Alemanha e Suíça. Constatou-se a baixa contribuição mundial do Brasil (0,08%) na geração de tecnologias, enquanto que EUA e Alemanha destacaram-se em capacidade inovativa. Todos os países mostraram uma variação relativa positiva (> 17%), entre 2011–2017. Conclui-se sobre a influência da Indústria 4.0 na inovação médica, apontando a aplicação de tecnologias 4.0 como estratégia de desenvolvimento social. Logo, esse artigo contribui para direcionar políticas de ciência, tecnologia e inovação a fim de otimizar índices de assistência à saúde.
