Youth crime represents a significant ongoing concern for the community and criminal justice agencies across Australia. Only a minority of youth offenders are held in detention, with all Australian states and territories embracing a range of diversionary options aimed at keeping young people away from formal contact with the criminal justice system. Particular concerns about increasing numbers of youths being held on remand and the continued overrepresentation of Indigenous youth in the Australian juvenile justice system are outlined.
