Background: The COVID-19 outbreak raised questions about how people experience their mental health, quality of life (QoL), wellbeing and loneliness in the context of social distancing, and the use of social media during this time Aims: To examine the experience of mental health, QoL, wellbeing and loneliness and use of social media among people living in Norway, USA, UK and Australia. Methods: A crosscountry comparative survey of people living in Norway, USA, UK and Australia. Relevant statistical analyses were used to examine differences between the countries and to explore associations between demographic, mental health and psychosocial variables and use of social media. Results: There were 3810 respondents from four countries, of which 50 À 74% showed a high level of emotional distress. The Norwegian population reported significantly better mental health, QoL and wellbeing and lower levels of loneliness compared to the other countries. High-frequent use of social media after the COVID-19 outbreak was associated with poorer mental-and psychosocial health. Conclusions: The results suggest that the COVID-19 outbreak took a toll on people's experience of mental health, QoL, wellbeing and experienced loneliness, and high-frequent use of social media was associated with these factors.
Objective/Hypothesis:To evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized intranasal bevacizumab injection in treating hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT)‐associated epistaxis.Study Design:Prospective pilot study. Methods:A total dose of 100 mg bevacizumab (25 mg/mL Avastin) was injected submucosally, 50 mg on each side. A total of 0.5 mL was injected in the sphenopalatine area, upper part of bony septum, upper part of the later nasal wall, and the anterior part of nasal floor. No cauterizations or laser therapy were done during or after the procedure. The hemoglobin level and grades of epistaxis were recorded before and monthly after the procedure. The IFT grading system (intensity [I], frequency [F] of epistaxis, and the amount of blood transfusion [T]) and epistaxis severity score (ESS) for hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia system were used. Quality of life (QoL) was evaluated before and 4 weeks after the procedure using the Short Form‐36 Health Survey questionnaire, Cantril's Self‐Anchoring Ladder questionnaire, and Slotosch disease‐specific QoL questionnaire. Results:A significant improvement was found in IFT grading (P = .007), ESS grading (P = .001), and hemoglobin level (P = .01). The QoL differences were statistically not significant. Conclusions:The four‐injection site technique of intranasal administration of bevacizumab is an effective treatment option in HHT‐associated epistaxis, at least on the short‐term effect. Long‐term and comparative studies are needed to further evaluate the significance of this treatment modality. Laryngoscope, 2012
The purpose of this study was to explore the literature on the psychosocial aspects of Marfan syndrome (MFS), to critically appraise and to synthesize relevant literature. A mixed-method systematic review was performed by searching the published literature databases using available medical, psychological, pedagogical and social databases and other sources. All studies that addressed psychosocial aspects of MFS, published in peer-reviewed journals were assessed. Of 81 search results, 15 articles (four articles based on same study population) satisfied the eligibility criteria. All studies were cross-sectional; no intervention or randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies were found. Most studies were of small sample sizes, had low response rate or participants without a verified diagnosis. Despite these limitations, all studies described, that MFS has a significant impact on the psychosocial aspects of people's lives: Decreased quality of life; challenges in education, work and family life, depression and anxiety. Some studies indicated that the subjective perception of discomfort did not necessarily match the medical severity of a disease. The research of the psychosocial aspects of MFS is limited in size and quality. More research is needed on the psychosocial aspects of MFS in samples with a verified diagnosis to develop evidence-based knowledge and appropriate guidelines.
The results reflect that MFS influences people's SWL and that particularly severe fatigue, aortic dissection, and psychological aspects are associated with lower SWL. This is important to take into account in the clinical work with people with MFS. Further investigation is needed, especially on larger sample groups. Studies with combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches are recommended to obtain more comprehensive and accurate knowledge about the consequences of MFS on satisfaction with life.
Background Social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in changes in the work environment and employment uncertainty. This paper reports on a cross-national comparison of four countries (Norway, UK, USA and Australia) and examines the differences in mental health between those individuals employed and those not employed during the social distancing implementation. Methods Participants (N = 3,810) were recruited through social media in April/May 2020 and were invited to complete a self-administered electronic survey over a 3-week period. Differences between those employed and those not employed with regard to their sociodemographic characteristics and mental health were investigated with chi-square tests, independent t tests, and one-way analysis of variances (ANOVAs). Results Compared with their counterparts, participants who were employed reported lower levels of mental health distress (p < 0.001), higher levels of psychosocial well-being (p < 0.001), better overall quality of life (p < 0.001), and lower levels of overall loneliness, social loneliness, and emotional loneliness (p < 0.001). Small to medium but consistent differences (Cohen’s d = 0.23–0.67) in mental health favor those with employment or those who were retired. Conclusion Further study is needed to assess mental health over time as the COVID-19 pandemic and employment uncertainty continues.
Women in the absence of demonstrated mutations have higher anxiety and depression levels than women with known mutation-carrier status. Access to genetic testing may be of psychologically benefit to women at risk for FBOC or HNPCC.
Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare, autosomal dominant disease characterized by the presence of recurrent epistaxis and small characteristic malformations of the peripheral blood vessels near the surface of the skin or mucosal linings. Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the lung, liver, and CNS are also known clinical findings. The purpose of this study was to examine quality of life (QoL) in patients with HHT in Norway. Sixty-six affected patients (39 women and 27 men) were included. QoL on overall-, health-related (HR-QoL), and disease-specific levels were measured with Cantril's Ladder (CL), Short Form 36 (SF-36), and a Symptom-specific QoL question in HHT patients (SFB-HHT-Q), respectively. Comparisons were made between patients and an age and gender adjusted normative sample from the Norwegian population (N = 990). Overall, the results reflected that several HHT disease-related variables were associated with reduced QoL on all three levels; overall QoL (CL), HR-QoL (SF36) as well as disease-specific QoL (SFB-HHT-Q), while demographic variables impacted HR-QoL in HHT patients. Compared to the normative sample, all subscales of SF36, but bodily pain, were significantly poorer in the HHT patients. HHT disease variables had the strongest association with QoL compared to demographic variables. The results substantiate that disease severity is associated with poorer QoL in this patients. Pain contributed independently to all levels of QoL.
Social distancing rules during the COVID-19 pandemic changed social interaction for many and increased the risk of loneliness in the general population. Social media use has been ambiguously related to loneliness, and associations may differ by age. The study aimed to examine loneliness and its association with social media use within different age groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia during April/May 2020, and 3,810 participants aged 18 years or above were recruited. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between social media use and social and emotional loneliness within separate age groups. Emotional loneliness was higher among young adults and among those who used social media several times daily. Adjusting by sociodemographic variables, using more types of social media was associated with lower social loneliness among the oldest participants, and with higher emotional loneliness among the youngest participants. Among middle-aged participants, using social media more frequently was associated with lower social loneliness. We found that the associations between social media use and loneliness varied by age. Older people’s engagement on social media may be a resource to reduce loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic. We observed higher levels of loneliness among high-frequent social media users of younger age.
