Introduction. Congenital Palmaris Longus (PL) absence was found in 15%–20.25% of population globally. This condition and Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) tendon absence in little finger are not known in Saudi Arabia. We studied prevalence of PL and FDS agenesis in Saudi Arabian population. Methods. A random cross-sectional study was carried out after an ethical approval in the Riyadh universities. Schaeffer's test was used to examine PL absence. The Modified test was used to examine FDS absence. Data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and the SPSS Software version 22. Results. The volunteers, 331, males 164 (49.5%) and females 167 (50.5%), mean age of 23 (SD ± 5.3), showed right hand dominance in 294 (88.8%) and bilateral absence of PL and FDS in 15.1% and 14.8%, respectively. The hand dominance showed no significant relation between PL and FDS absence, p value = 0.788, 0.835, respectively. Generally, we found a weak correlation between absence of the PL and FDS, p value ≥ 0.595. Conclusion. The bilateral absence of PL and FDS was found as 15.1% and 14.8%, respectively. Variation of the FDS tendon absence was an independent entity for the PL absence. The dominance of hands was not related to the tested variables found in PL and FDS agenesis.
Objectives:The purpose of this study is to understand the attitude of medical students at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) toward anesthesia as a specialty and to determine common factors influencing their career choice options.Study Design:This was a cross-sectional study.Methods:The study was conducted between March 25, and April 20, 2017, at KSAU-HS. The survey was distributed among 5th and 6th years medical students. Data were collected through a validated hardcopy questionnaire of 16 multiple choice questions. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, specialty preferences, what factors attract Saudi medical students to choose their preferred specialty and how they view the option of choosing anesthesiology as a career.Results:A total of 236 students completed the questionnaire. The majority of respondents were in their 5th year of medical school representing (62%). The distribution of medical field interest ranged from (38%) surgery to (1%) anesthesiology. approximately, (60%) thought that controllable lifestyle was an important factor to consider in choosing a residency program. Only (45%) of respondents thought that prestige of specialty is a major factor that would influence their choice for a specialty.Conclusion:Based on the outcome of the study, it is recommended that medical undergraduate students exposure to anesthesia specialty should be magnified. Greater efforts have to be made to increase the number of medical students preferring anesthesia through emphasizing on the positive aspects of the specialty.
Background: Circular external fixation including Ilizarov method is a well-established technique often practiced in orthopedic surgery. The goal of this procedures is to lengthen extremity bones, reconstruct severely injured or fractured bone trauma, correct congenital bone deformities, treat infected bones and to treat pseudarthrosis. The importance of this study is that it will highlight the most common complications for this procedure in order to reverse them and have a better clinical outcome. The aim of this study is to assess the indications and postoperative complication rates following tibial circular external by Illizarov's method. Methods: We performed a consecutive case series, chart review study of 33 patients who were treated with the Ilizarov method, between 2010 and 2016. All patients who underwent tibial circular external fixators using Ilizarov method were selected for this study. There were 25 males and 8 females, mean age was 31.06 (range 14 -71). All data collected was coded in Excel sheet. SPSS package version 20 was used for data analysis. Results: The total number of subjects involved in this study was 33 subjects (Male: 25[75%]-Female: 8[25%]). The average age of the subjects was 31.06 (range 14 -71) with a standard deviation of +/-13.8. Overall, 63.6% of patients reported post-op complications. Whereas 36.3% of patients were free of complications. The main complication was pain which was reported in 15% of the subjects. Conclusion: There was a minimal complication rate associated with this technique in our institution compared to published studies. Several medical conditions were the indication for this procedure, primarily motor vehicle accidents deformities.
