Background and Purpose: Almost one third of patients with node-negative rectal carcinoma develop systemic disease. This implies that these patients have occult disease that is inadequately treated by surgery alone. In this study sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping and a focused pathologic examination were combined to detect occult nodal metastases in rectal carcinoma.
