La francophonie en tant que champ d’étude de la littérature des régions du monde en dehors de la France métropolitaine ayant le français comme langue de communication apparaît de plus en plus, de nos jours, dans les universités en Amérique du Nord en général, et aux États-Unis en particulier. Cependant, force est de reconnaître que le terme « francophonie » tel qu’il apparaît pour la première fois vers la fin du XIXe siècle est loin de représenter un domaine d’études de la littérature et de la culture aussi riche que celui de l’Amérique du Nord d’aujourd’hui, d’où la problématique à résoudre : Qu’est-ce que la francophonie? Comment la francophonie en Amérique du Nord diffère-t-elle de celle du plus grand espace francophone en termes de locuteurs, en l’occurrence l’Afrique? Ce projet se propose de partir des définitions multidimensionnelles du terme francophonie pour se focaliser sur l’Amérique du Nord, en particulier les États-Unis où le terme représente un champ académique et révèle un aspect unique dans les institutions universitaires avec plusieurs défis qui, de nos jours, nécessitent des solutions pratiques.
