The purpose of this study was to review relevant literature on ageism among health care providers and assess interventions used to improve their attitudes toward older adults. Literature published between 1983 and 2011 was reviewed using the keywords
attitudes
,
older adults
,
nursing
, and
nursing students
using CINAHL, MEDLINE, and the Education Resources Information Center. Previous relevant research is discussed and includes studies categorized according to health care provider populations: (a) nurses, (b) nursing students, (c) medical students, and (d) direct care workers. Studies in nursing and medical professions that highlight ageism have been conducted; however, there is a gap in the literature concerning ageism among direct care workers. This often neglected, yet critical population of health care providers is essential to the care of older adults; recommendations regarding their training and mentoring are emphasized.
The purpose of this article is to review the nursing literature related to professional boundary violations in nursing. A search was conducted using CINAHL, MEDLINE, Ebscohost, and NCSBN. The key words searched were professional boundaries, boundary violation, boundary crossings, nurse, home health nurses, and home nursing. The search returned over 40 publications related specifically to boundary violations and nursing although only four of them are published research studies and one as a dissertation. Seven common characteristics emerged from the nonresearch nursing articles on professional boundaries: (1) Dual relations/role reversal, (2) Gifts and money, (3) Excessive self-disclosure, (4) Secretive behavior, (5) Excessive attention/overinvolvement, (6) Sexual behavior, and (7) Social media. Additional nursing research is greatly needed in the area of professional boundaries. The nurse-patient relationship should always be maintained for the benefit of the patient and not the personal gain of the nurse. Ongoing education in nursing practice regarding professional boundaries is needed. Nurses need to be mindful of state practice acts, codes of conduct, and employer policies.
[Purpose] The purpose of this project was to expose physical therapy students to transformative learning through a community health promotion project for mothers of hearing-challenged children. [Subjects and Methods] The participants were three mothers with their respective hearing-challenged child and twenty physical therapy students. The project consisted of seven sessions supervised throughout by a physical therapy instructor. The students participated in seven sessions, while the mothers were required to attend only two sessions of a health checkup and exercise program. [Results] Through the interaction between the mothers and students, the former felt physically and mentally refreshed, and the latter experienced transformative learning. The mother's physical status showed that all parameters for health variables were within normal range. However, it was found that mothers had little time for their personal mental or physical well-being because their focus was on planning and executing daily assignments for development of the child's verbal skills. [Conclusion] This project contributed to the students' learning experience and provided them with tools for possible future interest and involvement in community activity. The exercise session appeared to stimulate in the mothers an awareness and importance of their own personal and mental well-being.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
