Abstract. We address weak approximation for certain del Pezzo surfaces defined over the function field of a curve. We study the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of degree two del Pezzo surfaces with two A 1 singularities in order to prove weak approximation for degree two del Pezzo surfaces with square-free discriminant.
Hirschfeld classified split del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least three whose points are all contained on the lines in the surface. We continue his work and begin the classification of split degree two del Pezzo surfaces over finite fields whose points are all on the fifty-six exceptional curves of the surfaces.
Abstract. We address the question of the degree of unirational parameterizations of degree four and degree three del Pezzo surfaces. Specifically we show that degree four del Pezzo surfaces over finite fields admit degree two parameterizations and minimal cubic surfaces admit parameterizations of degree 6. It is an open question whether or not minimal cubic surfaces over finite fields can admit degree 3 or 4 parameterizations.
A result of Graber, Harris, and Starr shows that a rationally connected variety defined over the function field of a curve over the complex numbers always has a rational point. Similarly, a separably rationally connected variety over a finite field or the function field of a curve over any algebraically closed field will have a rational point. Here we show that rationally connected varieties over the maximally unramified extension of the p-adics usually, in a precise sense, have rational points. This result is in the spirit of Ax and Kochen's result saying that the p-adics are usually C 2 fields. The method of proof utilizes a construction from mathematical logic called the ultraproduct.
