Tissue analysis is commonly used in ecology and agronomy to portray plant nutrient signatures. Nutrient concentration data, or ionomes, belong to the compositional data class, i.e., multivariate data that are proportions of some whole, hence carrying important numerical properties. Statistics computed across raw or ordinary log-transformed nutrient data are intrinsically biased, hence possibly leading to wrong inferences. Our objective was to present a sound and robust approach based on a novel nutrient balance concept to classify plant ionomes. We analyzed leaf N, P, K, Ca, and Mg of two wild and six domesticated fruit species from Canada, Brazil, and New Zealand sampled during reproductive stages. Nutrient concentrations were (1) analyzed without transformation, (2) ordinary log-transformed as commonly but incorrectly applied in practice, (3) additive log-ratio (alr) transformed as surrogate to stoichiometric rules, and (4) converted to isometric log-ratios (ilr) arranged as sound nutrient balance variables. Raw concentration and ordinary log transformation both led to biased multivariate analysis due to redundancy between interacting nutrients. The alr- and ilr-transformed data provided unbiased discriminant analyses of plant ionomes, where wild and domesticated species formed distinct groups and the ionomes of species and cultivars were differentiated without numerical bias. The ilr nutrient balance concept is preferable to alr, because the ilr technique projects the most important interactions between nutrients into a convenient Euclidean space. This novel numerical approach allows rectifying historical biases and supervising phenotypic plasticity in plant nutrition studies.
ABSTRACTNitrogen is a nutrient that can be lost through leaching, volatilization and erosion. Crops require nitrogen in different doses and application times. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of BRSMG Curinga and IAC 202 rice to application of five doses of nitrogen (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg of N ha -1 ) using three nitrogen sources (ammonium sulfonitrate with nitrification inhibitor, ammonium sulfate and urea), at two times of application (at sowing or at tillering stage), with sprinkler irrigation. A randomized block design was used in a 5x3x2x2 factorial scheme, with four repetitions. The Curinga rice showed the highest grain yield. The doses of N increased the foliar N content, the height of plants, the number of panicles m -2 , the number of full grains panicle -1 , the mass of full grains per panicle and the grain yield, but did not influence the mass of 100 grains. The time of application and the nitrogen sources had a similar effect in all evaluations. The highest grain yield was reached with a dose of 122 kg of N ha -1 , regardless of the source.
REPONSE OF STAR FRUIT TREES TO LIMINGABSTRACT -The correction of the superficial and subsurface acidity of the soil, especially for perennial crops, is essential to ensure the fast establishment of the orchard and the early production of fruits. The present work aimed to evaluate the effects of liming in the implantation and formation of a star fruit orchard (Averrhoa carambola) and its reflections in the soil, the plant, the fruit production, as well as determining the duration of the residual effect of the initial application of the calcareous rock. The experiment was conducted at the Citrus Experimental Station in Bebedouro, São Paulo, in a Typic Haplustox (V initial = 26% in the 0 to 20 cm layer) between August 1999 and July 2006. The doses of limestone were: 0, 1.85, 3.71, 5.56 and 7.41 t ha -1 . During 78 months after the implementation of the corrective soil chemical analyses were performed as well as the evaluation of the nutritional status and the fruit production during five agricultural harvests. The liming provided the improvement of the chemical characteristics of the soil, raising pH, Ca, Mg, V% and reducing the H+Al, down to 60 cm deep. The leaf levels of Ca and Mg increased, correlating itself positively with the fruit yield. The highest combined star fruit production was associated with base saturation of 40 and 53% in the line and between the line of the star fruit orchard, respectively. Index Terms: Averrhoa carambola, soil acidity, limestone, mineral nutrition. Boro. Abstract -The objective was to study the application of lime and boron on the chemical in an Oxisol in the nutritional status and yield. The doses of limestone were increasing, considering the saturation of bases 70%, corresponding doses: zero, 0.6; 1.2 (saturation of bases = 70%), 1.8 and 2.4 t ha -1 , respectively. The lime used had relative power of total neutralization (PRNT) = 131% (neutralization power, PN = 137% and reactivity, RE = 95%). The boron doses studied were equal to 0 (zero), 0.6; 1.2; 1.8, and 2.4 mg dm -3 of B, with reference to the definition of the same 1.2 mg dm -3 B (or 1.2 kg ha -1 B). It was used as a source boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) (17% B). At the time of flowering was assessed the nutritional status of plants and, at 90 days were evaluated soil fertility and yield. There was improvement in soil pH of the attributes, SB, V and the concentration of Ca and Mg, and B with the use of boron fertilization. The interaction of lime with boron fertilization increased the concentration of Ca, Mg and B in plants. The data presented demonstrate that the common bean was responsive to liming and boron fertilization, reaching good production rates with the use of 1.8 kg ha -1 of B with increasing doses of lime.
