The benefits of collaborative work have been widely discussed and supported by educational theories such as constructivism and social learning. This paper investigates the process of collaborative work in a university classroom. It presents the students’ experience and attitudes towards using SecondLife in their learning activities. Questionnaire, interviews and observation methods were used to assess the students’ experience and attitudes. The study results indicate that students had enjoyed the experience of using SecondLife, although some negative attitudes and experience, concerning the system’s usability and familiarity, were reported.
Many scholars on E-procurement are investigating causes and factors to explain why the rate and speed of adoption is frequently very slow. This paper explores the organizational and environmental "E-Readiness" variables that might affect E-procurement adoption in Kingdom of Bahrain. Using Molla and Licker (2005)'s Perceived E-Readiness Model (PERM), this study investigated the effects of Perceived Organizational E-Readiness factors (POER) and Perceived External E-Readiness factors (PEER) on the adoption of E-procurement in Kingdom of Bahrain. Data were collected from 71 of ministries, authorities and some private companies. Using discriminant function, this research found that the external factors (Market Forces, Supporting Industries, and Government) affect mainly the initial adoption while the internal factor (Awareness, Commitment, Governance, Resources including human, business and technology resources) effect of the institutional adoption. The outcome of this research provides insights of factors to be considered at different adoption stage for a better E-procurement readiness in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Nowadays, we cannot exclude the use of technology from the technology-driven generation as the deployment of Information Technology become a necessity factor toward a successful process; especially in education due to its vital role in enhancing the students’ knowledge and skills development. One type of students that technology plays a major role in their development is gifted and talented students who have unique learning needs that are often overlooked in the traditional education setting. This research aims to explore the progress of technology use in gifted and talented education through reviewing and highlighting the best practices and research in this area based on both descriptive and empirical research. The review will include different areas of gifted programming such as learning and development, assessment, curriculum and learning environments. For this purpose, the online database is employed to extract the research done in the field between years 2010 to 2018. The contribution of this research resides in its exposure to the best practices of integrating technology in gifted and talented education through which teachers and practitioners can be encouraged to adopt them into their contexts. It also provides the researchers with intensive review of technology adoption for gifted and talented education with some suggestions for future research where they can focus their research on. Introduction Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by adjuvant radiotherapy has similar overall survival compared to mastectomy but is associated with higher rates of local recurrence. Positive surgical margins in BCS are the most important predictor of local recurrence. The aim of our study was to assess the risk factors associated with positive margins in women undergoing BCS for breast cancer in order to inform our clinical practice and minimize re-operation rates. Methods Patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer who underwent BCS from January 2013 to January 2021 were identified from our pathology database and included in the study. All patients underwent a lumpectomy with the removal of additional shaved cavity margins. Statistical analysis was used to assess the effect of patient clinical and pathological risk factors on the rate of positive margins. Results One hundred and twenty patients underwent BCS for breast cancer. Twenty-four percent of patients had positive margins. Of the 29 patients that underwent subsequent re-excisions, only 13 (45%) had residual disease in the re-excision specimen. In younger patients, tumors localized in lower quadrants and the presence of extensive intraductal component within invasive breast cancer increased the risk of positive margins. In addition, positive margins were encountered more significantly in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) compared to invasive tumors. Multivariate analysis showed that DCIS and young age were the only factors independently associated with positive margins. Conclusion DCIS and younger patients have a higher rate of positive margins during BCS than invasive breast cancer. For such patients at higher risk of positive margins, excision of cavity shave margins and intraoperative inking may be done to lower positive margin rates. Preoperative review of breast imaging, core biopsies, and counseling of patients about the likelihood of positive margins is important.
Collaborative problem solving was compared in SecondLife (SL) and Blackboard (BB) and both technologies were compared with a face-to-face (FTF) control condition. There were no performance differences overall, although FTF was quicker and preferred, followed by BB and SL. BB was perceived to be more usable, whereas SL provided better user experience. Worse performance was indicated by dislike of avatar interaction in SL, and poor user experience in BB, whereas better performance was associated with engagement with avatars, and better usability in BB. The affordances for collaboration in each technology are discussed, with reflections on the mixed methods approach using qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
Supernumerary tooth (ST) are the developmental disorders that could be found in either of the dental arches. Whereas the single ST is quite a common entity, multiple ST are rare, especially when they are not related to any syndromes or disorders. The experience of observing one such case is reported in light of a review of the literature on this condition. This report describes a case of a non-syndromic 22-year-old female who presented with multiple erupted and impacted ST in the mandibular premolar region. The patient was educated about the complications and consequences associated with ST and was advised for extraction of erupted supernumerary premolars and observation of the impacted ones but the patient denied any treating as ST were not causing any immediate problem. Radiographic assessment plays a pivotal part in early diagnosis and intervention as it aids in avoiding complications associated with ST, especially in non-syndromic cases or when they are asymptomatic. Patients should be counselled regarding the same with proper explanations of all the treatment options.
