Ambiguous figures reverse their appearance during prolonged viewing and can be perceived in two (or more) available interpretations. Both physical stimulus manipulations and cognitive control influence the perception of ambiguous figures, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In the current study, the perception of an ambiguous figure was manipulated by adaptation to unambiguous figures and/or placing the ambiguous figure into a context of unambiguous figures. Our results indicate that both adaptation and context can effectively modulate perception of the ambiguous figure. When manipulated together, adaptation and context processes showed additive effects upon the perception of the ambiguous figure implying the independent mechanisms. Thus, top-down and bottom-up processes seem to influence the perception of the ambiguous figures independently and neither seems to be uniquely responsible for the generation of perceptual changes.
PECULARITIES OF SYMMETRY DETECTION IN POLYGONS WITH DIFFERENT DEGREE OF SYMMETRYOna Gurčinienė, Alvydas Šoliūnas SummaryThough the mirror symmetry is investigated broadly the mechanisms of symmetry perception are not yet known. Most studies of symmetry perception are performed with dot patterns. This paper is devoted to extend the experimental data with different type of stimuli and procedures. The psychophysical experiment was conducted to determine the symmetry and asymmetry detection time and accuracy in the perfectly symmetrical and asymmetrical figures with different degree of symmetry. The figures (plane polygons) were constructed on a base of 3x3 square matrix and covered 5 squares area. The ratio of coincident with noncoincident elements of figures on both sides of axis of symmetry had three different values and indicated the degree of symmetry of asymmetrical figures. The symmetrical and asymmetrical figures were oriented vertically or horizontally and were of white colour on a black background. The exposition duration of figures was defined during the practice session individually for each subject so, that detection accuracy would be approximately 60–90% (it varied from 17 to 300 ms for different subjects). After the figure presentation the white masking square was presented for 500 ms covering the figure. The subject was asked to answer as fast as possible whether the figure was symmetrical or asymmetrical by pressing an appropriate key on a keyboard. Altogether 480 figures were presentated during the experiment that lasted about 40 minutes. The experimental results confirmed the advantage of vertical symmetry over the horizontal, that is the vertically symmetrical figures were detected more accurately and faster than horizontally symmetrical ones. Averaged results of all subjects indicated that the detection accuracy of asymmetry increased and the detection time decreased as the degree of symmetry of asymmetrical figures decreased. Depending on qualitative differences in the symmetry and asymmetry detection the subjects were divided into two groups. Majority of subjects detected asymmetry more accurately and faster than symmetry, and theirs detection time of asymmetry decreased as a degree of symmetry decreased. They detected the small deviation from perfect symmetry more accurately and theirs averaged detection time was shorter than it was for other subjects, which detected symmetry more accurately and faster than asymmetry. Last-mentioned subjects did not discriminate the asymmetrical figures with highest degree of symmetry from symmetrical ones, and the detection time of asymmetry almost did not depend on the degree of symmetry of asymmetrical figures. Detection time of symmetry and asymmetry was shorter for male than female subjects. The implications of individual differences in symmetry and asymmetry detection are discussed.
Ambiguous figures are pictures which reverse their appearance during prolonged viewing and can be perceived in two (or more) available interpretations. Explanations for this phenomenon favour either early bottom-up processes or higher-level top-down processes. This study aimed to investigate the perception of simultaneously presented neutral and biased (i.e. with a slight modification towards one or another of the available interpretations) ambiguous figures. Our results have indicated that observers tend to perceive two adjacent identical figures as reversing simultaneously, and the same percepts dominated both in the reversal rate and the duration of perception. In the case of biased and neutral figures presented in pairs, modifications of interpretation either increased or decreased the frequency of a biased percept. The results show that both bottom-up and top-down perceptual processes influence the perception of ambiguous figures.Key words: ambiguous figure, adaptation, multiple-figure presentation, bias, visual perceptionTENDENCIJOS ĮTAKA DVIEJŲ DVIPRASMIŲ FIGŪRŲ SUVOKIMUIMonika Intaitė, Alvydas Šoliūnas, Ona Gurčinienė, Osvaldas Rukšėnas SantraukaDviprasmės figūros yra vaizdai, kuriuos stebint ilgesnį laiką keičiasi jų suvokimas – galimos dvi (ar daugiau) jo interpretacijos. Šis fenomenas aiškinamas arba ankstyvesniais vadinamaisiais bottom-up procesais, arba aukštesnio lygio vadinamaisiais top-down procesais. Rezultatai gali būti aiškinami tuo, kad tiek bottom-up, tiek top-down procesai turi įtakos dviprasmių figūrų suvokimui.
THE EFFECT OF SYMMETRY ON THE RECOGNITION ACCURACY OF PATTERNS OF DIFFERENT COMPLEXITY Ona Gurčinienė, Alvydas Šoliūnas Summary Symmetry is one of the most important determinants of visual perception. The influence of pattern symmetry on their recognition accuracy was investigated in the psychophysical experiment on human subjects under the conditions of backward masking. A rectangular frame of twelve line segments of equal length was used as a masking pattern (MP). The test patterns (TPs), nonverbal figures were the parts of MP composed by joining four, six, or eight line segments. Five figure sets consisting of equal number of symmetrical and asymmetrical figures of different complexity were used in the experiment. TP was presented for 10 ms, followed by MP for 500 ms with interstimulus interval, which was established for each subject individually as the shortest interval permitting 50-90 proc. recognition accuracy. Each subject took part in four to six test trial sessions. In each trial session, the equal number of symmetrical and asymmetrical figures composed by the same number of line segments was presented for recognition. Experimental data have demonstrated that effect of symmetry on pattern recognition depends on the number of pattern components. The asymmetrical figures consisting of four and six line segments were recognised more accurately than symmetrical ones, whereas the asymmetrical figures consisting of eight line segments have had the lower recognition accuracy than symmetrical ones. Experimental results were interpreted on the basis of optimal relation between the number of elements and symmetry that enables the greatest recognition probability of visual patterns.
