Realizou-se um estudo sobre a frequência e fatores de risco relacionados à larva migrans visceral (LMV) em 1.131 usuários de laboratórios Goiânia (GO) -um público e outro privado. Para a pesquisa de anticorpos anti-Toxocara canis, as amostras de soro foram analisadas pelo ensaio imunoenzimático (ELISA) utilizando-se como antígeno produtos de excreção e secreção de larvas de terceiro estádio de T. canis. Para reduzir a possibilidade de reações cruzadas com espécies do gênero Ascaris, os soros foram previamente tratados com extrato de Ascaris suum. Foram consideradas positivas as amostras que apresentaram resultados de densidade ótica acima de 0,3. Empregou-se o teste Qui-Quadrado para avaliar diferenças de proporção. A frequência encontrada foi de 18,9% (IC 95% 16,7-21,3). Além da coleta de soro, as pessoas que concordaram em participar do estudo assinaram um termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido e concederam entrevistas para avaliação dos prováveis fatores de risco relacionados à transmissão da larva migrans visceral, tais como: presença de cães no domicílio e peridomicílio, história de moradia em zona rural, disponibilidade de água encanada, geofagia, uso de água de rio e cisterna, ingestão de legumes e verduras sem higienização prévia, hábito de lavar as mãos antes das refeições, manipulação de terra e areia. Para avaliação dos fatores de risco, foram calculadas estimativas de risco (Odds Ratio -OR) com respectivos intervalos de 95% de confiança. Presença de cães no domicílio/peridomicílio, história de geofagia e consumo de água sem filtrar constituíram fatores de risco estatisticamente significativos na transmissão de LMV, após ajuste para possíveis variáveis de confusão. Embora o percentual de 18,9% de soropositividade não possa ser extrapolado para a população do aglomerado urbano de Goiânia, os resultados sugerem ser elevada a frequência da infecção por T. canis nesta região.
