En un contexto de educación popular, en el ámbito de un curso preuniversitario que busca derechos y reducción de las desigualdades en el acceso a la educación superior, la contradicción entre los contenidos didácticos exigidos por el Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM) y formar ciudadanos con una percepción crítica de la realidad es un gran desafío. Por tanto, este trabajo investiga las percepciones de estudiantes de un curso popular en el Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, sobre un tema que permea la ciudadanía y la vista crítica de la totalidad: injusticias ambientales. La investigación incluyó el desarrollo de mapas mentales por parte de algunos de los estudiantes investigados. Apoyado en el marco teórico de la Educación Ambiental Emancipadora, se realizó el análisis de los mapas mentales utilizando la metodología propuesta por Salete Kozel. Los resultados indican que estudiantes consideran los bienes naturales como sujetos con derecho a la emancipación de daños causados por acciones humanas. Sin embargo, no representan a las poblaciones que sufren injusticias ambientales. El estudio de percepciones, por medio de mapas mentales, mostró que la cosmovisión de los estudiantes, producto de su contexto cultural, aún está lejos de comprender todo el concepto de 'injusticias ambientales'.
