Este artículo analiza el conflicto social entre las comunidades de Tacares Sur y Atenas, generado a raíz del proyecto Mejoras al Acueducto de Atenas, propuesto y ejecutado por el Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados [AyA]. Para esto, se utilizó el método etnográfico y por medio de un abordaje cualitativo, se aplicaron entrevistas a profundidad a trabajadores, tanto del AyA como de las Asociaciones Administradoras de los Sistemas de Acueductos y Alcantarillados Comunales [ASADA] Tacares Sur, y entrevistas etnográficas a miembros de ambas comunidades, ya que la percepción de estos sobre los acontecimientos son el fundamento de la investigación. Además, se analizó al recurso hídrico como informante clave. Se concluye que el conflicto se originó por falta de información y mala comunicación de los involucrados, esto propició que el chisme cobrara relevancia en ambas comunidades como medio para explicar el actuar de las instituciones involucradas y en el comportamiento de su contraparte.
