BACKGROUND:
The presence of nodules in the thyroid gland is common in iodine-deficient areas of the world. Recently, vitamin D levels were found to be lower than normal and sometimes deficient in malignant nodules of the thyroid.
OBJECTIVE:
Evaluate the relationship between the serum vitamin D levels and benign thyroid nodules in euthyroid patients.
DESIGN:
Cross-sectional.
SETTING:
Tertiary care center in Turkey.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Patients referred to the general surgery outpatient clinic and diagnosed with thyroid nodules were the study group. The control group consisted of healthy individuals without thyroid nodules. Age, BMI, thyroid ultrasonography, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, free T3, free T4, thyroid stimulating hormone, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, total protein, albumin, glucose, creatinine levels and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were compared between groups.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE:
Serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels and size of the thyroid nodules.
SAMPLE SIZE AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Of 849 individuals, 453 were patients with thyroid nodules and 396 were healthy individuals.
RESULTS:
The mean serum vitamin D levels of patients with thyroid nodules were significantly lower than controls (
P
<.001). Serum vitamin D levels along with serum total protein levels and eGFR were independent variables associated with the presence of a thyroid nodule (
P
<.001, p=.005 and
P
=.017, respectively).
CONCLUSION:
These findings suggest vitamin D deficiency might be one of the pathophysiologic factors in development of thyroid nodules.
LIMITATION:
Single-center and possible information bias.
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST:
None.

ÖzetBu araştırma ile küresel mobil iletişim sistemlerinden (GSM: Global system for mobil communications) yayılan radyo frekans dalgalarının rat spinal ganglion sinir hücreleri hücre zarında bulunan kalsiyum bağımlı klor kanallarına etkisinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla 20 adet 2 günlük Wistar sıçanlardan elde edilen ve kültür ortamında hazırlanan spinal ganglion sinir hücreleri kullanılmıştır. Hazırlanan çözelti içinde bulunan sinir hücreleri 5 santim mesafede 10 V/m elektrik alan şiddetinde 900 Mhz. frekansında toplam 6 dakika radyo frekansa maruz bırakıldı. Patch kenetleme tekniği ile hücre klor kanal akımlarında meydana gelen değişiklikler kaydedildi. Kayıtların analizinde ortama uygulanan radyo frekans sinyalinin, kalsiyum bağımlı klor kanallarının akımlarında ve membran potansiyelinde anlamlı değişimler oluşturmadığı gözlenmiştir.Anahtar sözcükler: Radyo frekans sinyali, Patch kenetleme tekniği, Spinal ganglion sinir hücresi
The Effect of Radio Frequency Signals on Calcium Dependent Chlorur Channels of Spinal Ganglial Cells SummaryThis study is intended to predict the effect of radio frequency waves of global mobile communication systems (GSM: Global system for mobile communication systems) on the calcium dependent chlorur channels of rat dorsal root ganglia neural cell membranes. For this purpose the spinal ganglia cells from 20 Wistar rats which were 2 days old and those prepared in culture media were used. The nerve cells were radiated by 10V/m electric field strength at 900 Mhz. from a distance of 5 cm for six minutes. Changes in cell current were recorded by patch clamp techniques. In the analysis of the records the applied radio frequency signal was not found to change the currents of calcium dependent chlorur channels and the membrane potential meaningfully. The analysis of recordings does not show any meaningful change in the currents of calcium dependent chlorur channels and the membrane potential of the spinal ganglia cells after exposure to a 900 Mhz radiofrequency field.
Objective: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the value of inflammatory parameters and indices of complete blood count (CBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in predicting negative laparotomies and severity of acute appendicitis in adults.
Material and Methods: A total of 1389 patients who had undergone appendectomy between January 2015 and November 2020 were enrolled in this observational and cross-sectional study. Age, gender, preoperative CRP values, inflammatory parameters of CBC and the pathologic diagnosis were recorded.
Multivariate analysis and logistic regression analysis were performed.
Results: In multivariate model white blood cell (WBC), platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), absolute neutrophil and lymphocyte counts, neutrophil percentage (NEU%), lymphocyte percentage (LYM%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and CRP-to-lymphocyte
ratio (CLR) were significant discriminators of negative laparotomy (p
