*Joint first authors.Carotenoids and retinoids have several similar biological activities such as antioxidant properties, the inhibition of malignant tumour growth and the induction of apoptosis. Supplementation with carotenoids can affect cell growth and modulate gene expression and immune responses. Epidemiological studies have shown a correlation between a high carotenoid intake in the diet with a reduced risk of breast, cervical, ovarian, colorectal cancers, and cardiovascular and eye diseases. Cancer chemoprevention by dietary carotenoids involves several mechanisms, including effects on gap junctional intercellular communication, growth factor signalling, cell cycle progression, differentiation-related proteins, retinoid-like receptors, antioxidant response element, nuclear receptors, AP-1 transcriptional complex, the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, carotenoids can stimulate the proliferation of B-and T-lymphocytes, the activity of macrophages and cytotoxic T-cells, effector T-cell function and the production of cytokines. Recently, the beneficial effects of carotenoid-rich vegetables and fruits in health and in decreasing the risk of certain diseases has been attributed to the major carotenoids, β-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, crocin (/crocetin) and curcumin, due to their antioxidant effects. It is thought that carotenoids act in a time-and dose-dependent manner. In this review, we briefly describe the biological and immunological activities of the main carotenoids used for the treatment of various diseases and their possible mechanisms of action.

Introduction: Cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) known as protein translocation domains (PTD), membrane translocating sequences (MTS), or Trojan peptides (TP) are able to cross biological membranes without clear toxicity using different mechanisms, and facilitate the intracellular delivery of a variety of bioactive cargos. CPPs could overcome some limitations of drug delivery and combat resistant strains against a broad range of diseases. Despite delivery of different therapeutic molecules by CPPs, they lack cell specificity and have a short duration of action. These limitations led to design of combined cargo delivery systems and subsequently improvement of their clinical applications. Areas covered: This review covers all our studies and other researchers in different aspects of CPPs such as classification, uptake mechanisms, and biomedical applications. Expert opinion: Due to low cytotoxicity of CPPs as compared to other carriers and final degradation to amino acids, they are suitable for preclinical and clinical studies. Generally, the efficiency of CPPs was suitable to penetrate the cell membrane and deliver different cargos to specific intracellular sites. However, no CPP-based therapeutic approach has approved by FDA, yet; because there are some disadvantages for CPPs including short half-life in blood, and nonspecific CPP-mediated delivery to normal tissue. Thus, some methods were used to develop the functions of CPPs in vitro and in vivo including the augmentation of cell specificity by activatable CPPs, specific transport into cell organelles by insertion of corresponding localization sequences, incorporation of CPPs into multifunctional dendrimeric or liposomal nanocarriers to improve selectivity and efficiency especially in tumor cells.

Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) have been involved in different functions including chaperone activity, protein folding, apoptosis, autophagy and immunity. The HSP families have powerful effects on the stimulation of innate immune responses through Toll-like receptors and scavenger receptors. Moreover, HSP-mediated phagocytosis directly enhances the processing and presentation of internalized antigens via the endocytic pathway in adaptive immune system. These properties of HSPs have been used for development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines against infectious and noninfectious diseases. Several studies also demonstrated the relationship between HSPs and drug resistance as well as their use as a novel biomarker for detecting tumors in patients. The present review describes different roles of HSPs in biology and medicine especially biochemical and immunological aspects.

The objective of this investigation was to illustrate the effects of quince seed mucilage (QSM) and ascorbic acid pretreatments to prevent the quality of freeze‐dried banana slices. The studied parameters were moisture content, antioxidant activity, total phenol, color properties, structural properties, and sensory evaluation. Both treatments were effective in protecting total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in dried banana slices ( P ˂ .05). The control slices showed greater increase in browning index (BI) and greater decrease in lightness (L*) than pretreated dried samples. Ascorbic acid and QSM treatments can be effective in the control of the enzymatic browning along with maintaining the quality properties of banana chips. Therefore, using of immersion pretreatment with 0.25% QSM and 0.05% ascorbic acid is recommended to prevent enzymatic browning as well as maintain the quality of banana chips before the drying process.

The CD5 molecule is expressed on T cells and, at a lower density, on a minor B cell subset (CD5+ B cells). The pan-B Ag CD72 was recently identified as the CD5 counterstructure, and several data suggest the involvement of this ligand pair in T-B cell cognate interaction. However, the functional role of CD5 and CD72 molecules within the B cell compartment is still unknown. In this work we studied umbilical cord blood CD5+ B cells (B-1a), adult splenic CD5- B cells (B-2), and CD5+ B cells from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Flow cytometry analysis and proliferation assays were used to determine 1) the ability of B-1a and B-2 cells to coexpress functionally relevant counterligands other than CD5 and CD72, and 2) the signaling capacity of CD5 and CD72 in terms of B cell activation and proliferation. To this purpose, freshly isolated or preactivated normal and neoplastic B cells were cultured with agonistic anti-CD5 or anti-CD72 mAbs in the presence or the absence of cytokines equipped with B cell activity. Our data demonstrate that CD5 and CD72 molecules are coexpressed with other ligand pairs usually involved in T-B cell cognate interaction on B-1a cells, but not on B-2 cells. CD5 and/or CD72 engagement delivers critical costimulatory signals in B-1a, B-2, and B cells from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, but with different requirements and patterns. Besides suggesting the potential involvement of B-1a lymphocytes in B-B cell interactions during T-independent B cell responses, our results indicate that CD5 and CD72 counterstructures play a functional role in the B cell compartment.
