The perceptions of the professionals in criminal justice regarding the reintegration process of minors and young adults in detention as well as those under criminal proceedings is rarely studied. Qualitative data from 21 criminal justice professionals in Iasi, Romania, were transcribed and thematically analyzed to explore their understandings of the experiences of the inmates and persons in probation services. Four thematic networks were found relevant: factors with a negative impact on reintegration, factors with a positive impact on reintegration, recommendations for improvement of the reintegration processes, and perceptions on national and local policies. The interactions between democracy, security, and violence as perceived by the justice system professionals in this study delineate a change in the role of the penitentiary system and in the roles and identities of the justice system professionals.
Public Significance StatementProfessionals' perceptions provide unique recommendations for public policies regarding reintegration of detainees after being released from prison, as well as useful guides for justice system institutions that are involved in these processes. The interactions between democracy, security, and violence as they are viewed by justice system professionals may guide the changes of the role of the penitentiary system and of the roles and identities of professionals.
