RESUMOA adolescência é uma etapa da vida em que ocorrem mudanças no aspecto biológico praticamente semelhante para quaisquer adolescentes. O presente estudo procura compreender os esclarecimentos fornecidos pelas adolescentes grávidas referenciadas a uma Unidade de Saúde da Família, localizada em um bairro periférico de um município do Sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Os sujeitos do estudo foram três adolescentes grávidas, acompanhadas de um familiar. Estas foram selecionadas conforme a ordem de chegada para consulta de pré-natal à referida unidade de saúde, no mês de dezembro de 2006. A metodologia adotada é qualitativa e descritiva. O método utilizado para a coleta de dados foi entrevista semiestruturada, juntamente com a construção do genograma e ecomapa de cada adolescente. As entrevistas foram gravadas e transcritas. Após a análise dos dados os resultados apontaram que as adolescentes tinham informação sobre métodos contraceptivos, mas tinham a ideia mágica da não ocorrência da gestação. Salientamos a importância da atuação dos profissionais de saúde em promover o acesso à educação sexual e reprodutiva das adolescentes, fazendo com que esse número crescente de adolescentes grávidas venha a diminuir. This study seeks to understand the explanations provided by pregnant teenagers referred to a Family Health Unit, located in a peripheral neighborhood of a city in South Brazil, State of Rio Grande do Sul. The study was based on three pregnant teenagers, accompanied by a relative. These adolescents were selected according to the order of arrival for pre-natal consultations to the health unit in december (2006). The methodology is qualitative and descriptive. The method used to collect data was semi-structured with the construction of genogram and ecomap of each teenager. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. After analysis of the data the results indicate that the adolescents had information about contraceptive methods, but they thought that the pregnancy would not occur. We point out the importance of health professionals to promote access to sexual and reproductive education for adolescents, so making the growing number of pregnant teenagers decrease. RESUMOO câncer de colo uterino constitui um problema de saúde pública em nosso país. A literatura evidencia a prevenção por meio de ações de educação em saúde e conscientização da população. A pesquisa investigou o conhecimento das mulheres sobre prevenção do câncer de colo uterino. Utilizando metodologia qualitativa, entrevistamos cinco mulheres entre 25 e 60 anos de idade usuárias de uma unidade sanitária localizada em um município da região do Vale dos Sinos/RS. Constatamos que as mulheres têm carência de conhecimentos em relação à prevenção de câncer de colo uterino; sentem-se envergonhadas, com medo, e não seguem a periodicidade de realização do exame preconizada pelo Ministério da Saúde. Ratifica-se a necessidade de o enfermeiro ser mais ativo na educação em saúde, orientando sobre prevenção, para corrigir informações repassadas pelos amigos e meios de comunicação, especialmente a televisão. INTRODUÇÃOO câncer de colo uterino é tido como afecção progressiva e caracterizado por alterações intraepiteliais cervicais que podem se desenvolver para um estágio invasivo ao longo de uma a duas décadas. Possuindo etapas bem definidas e de lenta evolução, o câncer de colo de útero pode ser interrompido a partir de um diagnóstico precoce e tratamento oportuno a custos reduzidos (1) . Mesmo assim, os índices são alarmantes. A cada ano, são diagnosticados 500.000 casos desse câncer, que, mundialmente, consiste na segunda principal causa de morte por câncer em mulheres (2) . No Brasil, os índices são semelhantes, pois o câncer constitui o segundo tipo de tumor maligno mais comum entre as brasileiras e o quarto que mais mata. No entanto, esse quadro pode ser revertido com medidas centradas na prevenção, já que o câncer de colo de útero atinge 100% de cura se diagnosticado precocemente (3) . Diante disso, é imperativo que os profissionais de saúde, entre estes os enfermeiros, voltem seu olhar para essa realidade, pois a morbimortalidade por tal afecção pode ser reflexo de ações e políticas de prevenção deficitárias. Além disso, vencer as barreiras para uma melhor adesão da mulher ao exame preventivo significa dar atenção aos relatos e experiências de quem faz o exame para identificar o significado deste para as mulheres que a ele se submetem (4) , de modo a daí extrair informações e argumentos para planejar e adequar as orientações de prevenção.Sensibilizadas com o tema e interessadas em buscar respostas a estas inquietações, formulamos o seguinte objetivo: investigar o conhecimento das mulheres sobre a prevenção do câncer de colo uterino. MATERIAL E MÉTODOSPara atender ao objetivo proposto, realizamos um estudo de abordagem qualitativa (5) .
