The present work analyzes, in the history of Portuguese, the phenomenon known as "Differential Object Marking", which consists in marking the direct object with a preposition. For Portuguese, it is generally assumed that the phenomenon occurs only with the preposition a. For the accomplishment of this task, Portuguese data from the 16th to the 19th century were analyzed in texts written by Portuguese authors that constitute the Tycho Brahe Parsed Corpus of Historical Portuguese and the Corpus Post Scriptum: a digital archive of ordinary writing (Early Morden Portugal and Spanish). Our work has two main objectives: (i) to describe and analyze the characteristics of the phenomenon in Portuguese and (ii) to verify the influence of the Spanish language on Portuguese. The factors that were analyzed in this work have been pointed out in the literature as triggers of Differential Object Marking. Among these factors are the presence of semantic features of animacy, definiteness and specificity, and the categorial nature of the direct objects that are marked differentially. In this work, we investigated whether the presence of Differential Object Marking in Portuguese is the result of the influence of Spanish. This hypothesis is motivated by some factors, such as the high frequency of marked objects in Spanish and the great influence that Spain exerted on Portugal, which began even before the creation of the Iberian Union (1580-1640). Studies on Portuguese attest that the phenomenon has decreased throughout the history of the language (RAMOS, 1992;GIBRAIL, 2003;DÖHLA, 2014;PIRES, 2016). Considering this, in this work we compared data from the 16th and the 17th century in which the direct object is marked by the preposition a and data in which the direct object receives no differential marking, that is, typical cases of direct object. The results of the analyzed data indicate that in the period in which Portugal was under the dominion of Spain there was an increase in the frequency of the phenomenon, however, the distribution of the Differential Object Marking in Portuguese differs from the distribution of the phenomenon in Spanish of the centuries analyzed here. In 16th to 17th centuries, the phenomenon was mandatory in Spanish with personal pronouns and proper names, and optional with human DPs (GARCÍA, 1993;COMPANY COMPANY, 2003). Our results show that in the Portuguese of the same centuries, these contexts are not obligatory as triggers of the Differential Object Marking by the preposition a. We also attested a high frequency of occurrence of the phenomenon with DPs, proper names, titles of nobility and full pronouns with direct object function when the semantic features of animacy, definiteness and specificity have a positive presence.
