OBJETIVO: identificar os sentimentos, conhecimento e práticas de homens frente ao diagnóstico de câncer de próstata. MÉTODO: trata-se de um estudo descritivo e exploratório com abordagem qualitativa, realizado com 14 homens em tratamento do câncer de próstata. Para a organização dos polos cronológicos foi utilizada a técnica de análise de conteúdo segundo a perspectiva de Bardin da qual emergiram duas categorias: sentimentos vivenciados pelos pacientes com câncer de próstata e conhecimento e práticas de pacientes frente ao diagnóstico de câncer de próstata. RESULTADOS: evidenciou-se que o diagnóstico de câncer de próstata gera sentimentos de susto, tristeza, decepção com tratamento tardio, confiança e ao mesmo tempo desconfiança diante do prognóstico, além de tranquilidade se acompanhada por apoio familiar e espiritual. Demonstrou-se pouco conhecimento quanto aos métodos de diagnóstico, o que pode ter determinado as práticas menos favoráveis de saúde. CONCLUSÃO: o diagnóstico de câncer de próstata gerou sentimentos negativos e levou a busca pelo apoio na família e espiritualidade como forma de estratégias para o enfrentamento da patologia. O tema ainda necessita ser melhor divulgado quanto as formas de diagnóstico correto entre os homens. Portanto, é sugerido medidas de conscientização aos mesmos quanto aos cuidados necessários com sua saúde no decorrer da vida, bem como o apoio aos familiares inseridos no contexto.
