The object of this INTRODUÇÃOA insuficiência renal crônica é a perda brusca ou gradativa, de forma irreversível, da função renal, e seus portadores são submetidos a tratamentos de substituição desta função (diálise ou transplante renal) para que haja a manutenção da vida (RIELLA,1996). Pela definição, já se tem nítido que o indivíduo que até então era saudável e, na maioria das vezes, não precisou dos cuidados de outros (equipe de saúde), enfrenta a realidade de, a partir de determinado momento, necessitar da assistência constante e permanente de um serviço de saúde, de uma máquina e de uma equipe multiprofissional, perdendo grande parte de sua autonomia de vida.O paciente renal crônico, quando em programa de hemodiálise, convive diariamente com o fato de ser portador de uma doença crônica que o obriga a um tratamento doloroso, de longa duração e que provoca, juntamente com a evolução da doença, alterações de grande impacto, tanto na sua vida quanto na de seus familiares.Devido às alterações fisiológicas, tornam-se necessárias mudanças de hábitos e costumes, até então usuais, de maneira radical.
