En nous référant à la théorie des systèmes familiaux de Murray Bowen, nous nous intéresserons à la place de l’alcool au sein du couple. À travers la présentation d’une étude de cas, nous montrerons comment l’alcool participe à la régulation de la distance relationnelle et à la différenciation au sein du couple comme tiers dysfonctionnel. En effet, l’anxiété d’intimité peut conduire à des processus de triangulation impliquant l’alcool pour pallier le stress relationnel. C’est pourquoi, et contrairement à ce qui est attendu par les partenaires, le fait de surmonter le problème d’alcool peut amener à une augmentation de la détresse conjugale, et mettre en lumière les déséquilibres relationnels originels. Les défis pour les thérapeutes systémiciens sont alors d’accompagner les partenaires vers un plus grand degré de différenciation, tout en prenant soin de leur appartenance au couple, en veillant à libérer le système du tiers alcool. De même, il s’agira d’être attentifs pour les cliniciens à ne pas être investis comme nouveau tiers à trianguler.
