El 27 de julio de 1887, el periódico La época publica un artículo en el que su autor denuncia con inusitado pavor el hecho de que importantes hombres de ciencia de todo el mundo estén refrendando abiertamente la práctica médica conocida como hipnotismo. Más aún sorprenderá al lector y al crítico modernos que el autor relacione el hipnotismo de forma natural con un género literario en el margen de lo canónico – la literatura gótica – y con un movimiento religioso alternativo – el espiritismo – acusando a los dos de fomentar dicha práctica. En primer lugar, este trabajo estudia el poder de sugestión y la pérdida de control del individuo como temas unificadores y fuentes del horror detrás de los tres discursos. En segundo lugar, a través de la lectura de la prensa periódica y otros ensayos en forma de libro, se presentan las superficiales similitudes entre la novela gótica y el espiritismo (la presencia del más allá, lo seudocientífico, lo psicológico y lo sublime) que constituyeron la base de las feroces críticas de sus detractores. En tercer lugar, se examinan los orígenes, motivaciones y contextos culturales en los que surgen la literatura gótica y el espiritismo para poner de relieve las importantes diferencias en sus respectivas respuestas a los retos literarios, científicos y espirituales de la modernidad, y de ahí las implicaciones que éstas tienen para nuestro acercamiento a la epistemología decimonónica española.
