São feitas anualmente 234 milhões de cirurgias, de acordo com a Organização Mundial de Saúde, em que sete milhões de pessoas apresentarão alguma complicação durante ou após o ato cirúrgico. Esses números poderiam ser evitados se ações de segurança fossem seguidas. A literatura mostra-se escassa do impacto de corpos estranhos intracavitários após os procedimentos cirúrgicos, particularmente após toracorrafia. Essa condição é provavelmente subnotificada, pois está associada a inúmeras complicações clínicas, éticas e legais. Este estudo sugere um protocolo clínico para suspeita de corpo estranho intracavitário após a toracorrafia a partir de experiência de campo e revisão bibliográfica a respeito de complicações no trans-operatório e cirurgia segura. A proposta deste protocolo é mais uma ferramenta no combate a morbimortalidade trans-operatória, garantindo a prática da cirurgia segura.
