A aspergilose é uma micose oportunista causada pelos fungos do gênero Aspergillus e acomete diversas espécies de aves silvestres e domésticas, mamíferos domésticos e silvestres e o homem. Ela é uma das principais causas de óbito de pinguim-de-magalhães (Spheniscus magellanicus) que são mantidos em cativeiro ou em centros de reabilitação, sendo a principal espécie causadora dessa doença a Aspergillus fumigatus, ocorrendo em 95% dos casos. O presente trabalho objetiva realizar uma revisão bibliográfica acerca do tema, a fim de reunir informações importantes sobre a aspergilose em pinguins-de-magalhães. Para a pesquisa, foi utilizado o Google Scholar, levando em consideração pesquisas, relatos de caso e artigos científicos publicados nos últimos dez anos. A aspergilose é uma doença de caráter cosmopolita, caracterizada por acometer aves imunossuprimidas, ocasionando principalmente lesões no trato respiratório inferior. A transmissão ocorre através dos conídios que são liberados no ar por espécies desse gênero. O pinguim-demagalhães tem ocorrência no hemisfério sul e realiza migração para a costa brasileira para se alimentar após a reprodução, que ocorre na costa da Argentina, Chile e Ilhas Malvinas. Durante esse período, essa espécie é exposta a poluentes ambientais provenientes da atividade marítima que ocasionam a perda da impermeabilidade das penas, desidratação, caquexia e hipotermia, fazendo com esses animais se aproximem da costa litorânea e sejam resgatados. O estresse proveniente desta situação somado ao manejo dos centros de recuperação contribuem para imunossupressão do indivíduo, tornando-os suscetíveis à infecção por A. fumigatus. Ademais, a anatomia é um outro fator que aumenta a predisposição dos pinguins para a aspergilose, pois apresentam presença de sacos aéreos, ausência do reflexo da tosse, da epiglote e diafragma e seu sistema mucociliar é escasso, contribuindo para a chegada dos conídios ao trato respiratório inferior. O hospedeiro contamina-se ao inalar grandes quantidades de conídios que colonizam a mucosa respiratória e se disseminam para outros órgãos. Animais acometidos apresentam infecção crônica com sintomatologia tardia, esses sintomas incluem: dispnéia, letargia, anorexia e regurgitação, emaciação e morte súbita. São achados clínicos comuns: granulomas branco amarelados nos pulmões, espessamento e aumento da opacidade dos sacos aéreos com presença de granulomas miliares e fibrose, edema e congestão pulmonar. O diagnóstico pode ser realizado através da cultura fúngica de amostras clínicas (técnica padrão ouro) e microscopia direta para descartar a presença ou ausência do aspergillus; podem ser utilizados métodos auxiliares de estudos como: raio-x, USG, tomografia, hemograma e endoscopias para realização de lavado traqueobrônquico para coleta de material, porém em pinguins são descritos apenas estudos de detecção de antígeno galactomanana e anticorpos circulantes, essa escassez de estudos culmina num diagnóstico tardio, fato que contribui para o elevado número de óbitos.
