Resumo: Uma metodologia qualitativa, observação participante, foi utilizada para analisar as representações de envelhecimento e qualidade de vida, tal como percebidos pelos idosos. Trabalhou-se com vinte e nove idosos membros do Grupo da Terceira Idade na cidade de Viçosa Minas Gerais. Por meio de entrevista semi-estruturada, gravada e transcrita, coletou-se dados sobre seus modos de vida, estilos de vida, o que é ser idoso e seus papéis sociais, saúde, qualidade de vida e os fatores que afetam a sua autonomia. Evidenciou-se que as representações de envelhecimento e qualidade de vida ultrapassam os limites biomédicos e se revestem de significados próprios. Para os idosos qualidade de vida significa a capacidade de realizar atividades sem interferência de outras pessoas. Eles também consideram velhas as pessoas que são incapazes de desempenhar qualquer atividade física e/ou mental. Palavras-chave: Envelhecimento. Qualidade de vida. Representação do Envelhecimento. Abstract: Participant observation, a qualitative methodology, was used to analyze aging perception in an elderly group. Data of twenty-nine members from Viçosa – MG "Third Age" group was collected. The interviews were recorded and than transcripted. From those interviews data about lifestyle, elderly social role, health, definition of word "elderly" and how those factors affects elderly lives, was collected. Results of this study showed that definition of "elderly" and quality life overcome biomedical limits and it had their own meanings. Quality life for an elderly person means be able of living his/her life by himself/herself, without interference of any kind. They consider as an old person someone who cannot perform any physical and/or mental activity. Keywords: Aging. Quality Lives. Representation of Aging.
