En anglais le terme queer signifie « bizarre », « louche » mais aussi « pédé » ou « gouine ». Cette insulte est progressivement réappropriée par les personnes visées pour en faire un étendard politique, parfois traduit en France par « transpédégouines ». Cet article propose d’interroger les liens réciproques entre carrière queer (militante et sexuelle) et carrière professionnelle, en étudiant les personnes queers comme des personnes engagées dans des trajectoires sociales dont la soutenabilité n’est pas acquise a priori. L’enquête, fondée sur une soixantaine d’entretiens biographiques, fait émerger trois pôles entre lesquels les queers enquêté·e·s se répartissent, en fonction de leurs caractéristiques sociales : « une radicalité queer coûteuse », où la primauté donnée au mode de vie queer se réalise au détriment de l’emploi ; « faire carrière en queer », où la sphère professionnelle est envisagée comme un lieu de lutte nécessaire (santé, éducation et travail social) ; enfin « mettre à distance la communauté queer pour faire carrière », quand le mode de vie queer s’avère incompatible avec les normes du milieu professionnel.
