To the Editor:COVID-19 first appeared in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and soon became a "global epidemic" in 210 countries. COVID-19 disease is an acute respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus, which is highly prevalent worldwide. Mortality rates are about 3%, with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, lethargy, indigestion, cough, and shortness of breath. 1,2 Following the pandemic crisis of COVID-19, the disease was confirmed in Iran in February 18, 2020, and has affected almost all provinces of the country.Because of the widespread outbreak of COVID-19 in the country and the emphasis on hand hygiene and proper disinfection of surfaces in homes and places and the important role of using disinfectants, including products based on ethanol to prevent this infection, unfortunately, according to published observations and news, cases of poisoning and death due to oral consumption of solutions containing ethanol and even in some cases oral consumption of methanol by mistake has been reported in some patients to prevent COVID-19.A member of the faculty of the Research Center of the Forensic Medicine Organization of the country said: from February 20 last year to April 25 this year, 796 deaths were reported due to methanol poisoning. Tehran, with 205 cases, has the highest number of deaths among the provinces.Unfortunately, in recent years, we have witnessed mass poisoning caused by methanol and the effects of counterfeit alcoholic beverages in the country.
