In this study, surfactant-modified natural zeolite was used to remove Bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solutions. Kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamics of BPA adsorption on the adsorbent surfaces were investigated. The experimental data were described with the Temkin isotherm and the pseudo-second- order kinetic model. Taguchi's robust design approach was used to optimize adsorption of BPA. Experimentation was planned as per Taguchi's L27 orthogonal array. Tests were conducted with different adsorbate amount, pH, time, initial concentration of BPA, temperature and agitation speed. The optimum levels of control factors for maximum total organic carbon removal were defined (adsorbate amount at 0.25 g, pH at 7, time at 30 min, initial concentration of BPA at 50 mg/L, temperature at 30°C and agitation speed at 200 rpm). The ANOVA analysis shown that the most effective control factor is adsorbent dosage; its contribution is 56.4%. Contribution of pH and mixing rate are 7.5% and 7.6%, respectively. A confirmation experiment was conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the optimal combination. The observed value of S/N (η = 39) ratio is compared with that of the predicted value (η = 48). The prediction error, that is, η- η = 9, is within CI value.
Drinking water was produced from Marmara seawater by membrane distillation (MD). The best operating conditions were determined by batch experiments as: 0.45 μm PTFE, 30°C distillate temperature and temperature difference, and 270-360 L/h cross-flow rates in feed-distillate. Seawater desalination was carried out with 99.93% solute rejection and 17.2 L/m 2 h permeate flux in 66% concentration ratio by lab-scale pilot system. Since the desalinated water contained no organic carbon, turbidity, and nitrate, it seemed to be very suitable for immediate service with quality of 7.3 pH, clear, odor-free, 76.0 μS/cm, 47.1 mg TDS/L, <0.001 color, and 0.01 mg boron/L. The product water lacked of vital cations, especially Nathat are essentials for promoting osmotic balanced body liquid and healthy development. A holistic management approach towards satisfying specific water quality requirements in direct service of MD effluents to human consumption was proposed that jointly included in injecting into urban potable water, adding appropriate chemicals into the effluent, and mixing effluents with raw or concentrated seawater (1:250/1:1000 for Marmara seawater) or brackish natural waters under hygienic precautions.
The treatment of the resultant concentrate current with the IOP/submerged UF hybrid processes, it was observed that UVC-submerged UF process provided the best performance. TOC and COD values in the UF effluent were found to be close to the values of the raw paper wastewater used and it was determined that it could be fed to the NFloose input. Thus, while water recovery is ensured, it was also observed that the minimization of the membrane concentrate through hybrid process will achieve significant contributions to concentrate waste management.
