BackgroundOrgan transplantation is recognized as a life-saving procedure for patients with potentially terminal illnesses. However, the population's awareness of organ donation and related issues is variable throughout the world. ObjectivesThe study purposes to evaluate the knowledge and attitude toward organ donation among the adult population in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study on the general population in Jazan using the convenient sampling method. The questionnaire was composed of 21 items distributed over demographic characteristics, knowledge, and attitude domains. The knowledge and attitude domain levels were categorized into low, moderate, and high based on the scoring of its items. The data had been analyzed using SPSS software version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Frequency and percentages were used to display categorical variables. Mean and standard deviation was used to present numerical variables. The independent t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were both used to test for factors associated with knowledge score and attitude score toward organ donation. ResultsA total of 1019 participants were included in the study. The majority were between the ages of 18 and 30 years and 3.4% of them were older than 50 years. Eighty percent of participants had a university level of education or higher and 48% were students. This survey showed that 493 (48.4%) had a moderate knowledge level of organ donation (total score between 50% and 75%) with younger age, being a student, and residence status associated with a higher level of knowledge while gender and the education levels were not. Five hundred one (49.2%) of the participants reported being in agreement with organ donation and 56 (5.5%) of them reported disagreement. Most of the participants exhibited a low positive attitude toward organ donation, with 592 (58.1%) of the participants (a total score less than 50%) (score of 4 and less). Young age and being a student were the factors associated with a positive attitude while gender, education levels, residence status, and monthly status were having no significant associations with the positive attitude toward organ donation. ConclusionThis study concluded that study participants had a moderate level of knowledge and a low positive attitude toward organ donation. The advocacy in promoting organ donation should be increased through the use of appropriate mediums to change the attitudes and enhance the willingness of people.
In previous studies, there was an apparent lack of health education about dengue fever (DF) among the Saudi population. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) about dengue fever among the Jazan region population, which is one of the most prevalent diseases in the region in Saudi Arabia (KSA). This was a cross-sectional and community-based study. The adult population was divided into governorates according to the regions that were close to each other, and then a convenient stratum was selected from each region. Next, random sampling was applied. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Exclusion criteria were young people (<18 years old) and health workers. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, the Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. Of the 392 participants in this cross-sectional study, 59.18% were male, 76.28% were aged 18–35 years, 72.96% had a university degree, and 63% had a monthly income of less than SAR 5000 (USD1 = 3.76). The scores (mean ± SD) for KAP regarding DF among the responders were 22.77 ± 7.9, 22.68 ± 7.24, and 25.62 ± 9.4, respectively. KAP constructs were positively correlated according to the Pearson’s coefficient. In multiple linear regression analysis, males were favorably and substantially linked with attitude score (β = 2.76, p = 0.001) and negatively associated with practice score (β = −2.45, p = 0.023). No-degree participants scored lower on knowledge (β = −2.78, p = 0.003). There is potential for more research in Saudi Arabia to increase the generalizability to reduce the impact of dengue epidemics.
Background: The articulating surface of the knee is the most commonly injured joint in athletes. However, there is a lack of proper prevalence and determinant estimations for knee injury among Jazan University students. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of knee injury among students at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia and to identify the associated risk factors. An online self-administered modified Arabic version of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score questionnaire was distributed to collect data from the students. 884 participants were included and met our inclusion criteria. Results: The overall prevalence of knee injuries was 18% (n = 156). Ninety-two injuries were due to sports activity. Men were 2.7 more likely to have a knee injury than women. Performing 2–3 hours of training every week increased the likelihood of knee injury by 1.7 times more than being inactive or performing only 1 hour of activity per week. An increase in the body mass index was associated with knee injury. Conclusion: Our study highlights the high prevalence of knee injury among male students with a high body mass index, especially those studying in medical colleges. Further large-scale research is needed to address the limitations of this study and generalize the results to a larger population.
Background: Oral cancer (OC) is a cancer of the mucosal lip, oral cavity, and tongue and is linked to drinking, smoking, or both. After lymphoma and leukemia, oral cancer is the third most common malignancy in Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical study was conducted in the Jazan province. We used an online qustionnare and the sample was selected in a random, multistage manner, with a total of 400 members from both genders. A representative subregion was randomly selected from each sector, including Baish, Samtah, Faifa, Sabya, Abu Arish, and Jizan. Results: Almost all of the participants in the study appeared to be aware of oral cancer. Oral cancer is not a contagious disease, according to 65% of respondents. Sniffing is a risk factor for oral cancer, according to 85% of respondents; yet, 61.7% believed that it can be healed. Majority of the study participants believed that sun exposure and alcohol consumption are both risk factors for mouth cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation surgery, and mouth augmentation surgery are all options for treating oral cancer. Seventy percent felt that oral self-examination can help detect oral cancer, and that early discovery can speed up treatment. Conclusion: We conclude that the research participants lacked sufficient understanding of early clinical signs and treatment options for oral cancer. A community-wide educational initiative might help to increase awareness and knowledge about oral cancer. Furthermore, additional research should be undertaken to determine the efficacy of the intervention.
