Measured were the cutting forces, the power requirements and the surface roughness during the machining of pieces of beech (Fagus silvatica) and spruce (Picea excelsa). The machining process was carried out on a shaper with speci®c devices. The concerned variables were: cutting depth, feed rate and cutting speed. The mean chip thickness and cutting width were constant. The machining process was done in two different ways: conventional and climb cutting; thus it was possible to compare both working directions with the same machining parameters and watch their in¯uence on the cutting forces, the power consumption and the surface roughness. The most important variables on the cutting forces are depth of cut, wood density and feed direction. With regard to power consumption, it was detected that the most important variables were cutting speed, feed direction, depth of cut and wood density. It was further demonstrated that the measured and calculated power have a very good correlation, and that the cutting forces can be determined by the calculated power. Thus, if cutting power is measured for a speci®c condition of wood and machine, the cutting forces can be estimated. The surface roughness was very homogeneous in all the tests. The better machining process was obtained when applying conventional cutting. Then the cutting forces, the power requirements and the roughness standard deviation reach smaller values.
Wood machining is strongly in¯uenced by the wood texture. Thus, it is a very important ®eld of research in order to achieve the optimum wood machining conditions. This study focusses on MDF, a far more homogeneous wood based material than solid wood. First of all, MDF cutting is described in function of moisture content and density. For constant machining conditions, the behavior of the cutting force components were observed as a function of density changes. Then the surface roughness was analyzed. The same method was further applied for variable cutting conditions. The evolution of cutting power and forces was observed with the aim to forecast it, if the species factor (Ke) and moisture content factor (Kh) are known. After the values of these factors have been adequately determined, the cutting forces and power cutting levels for the different layers of density found in MDF can be easily calculated.
Objective. Knowledge and quantification of the microcirculation are very important for estimating the status of an organ. Real-time contrast-enhanced sonography assesses microvascular tissue perfusion. This technique has been proposed as innocuous; however, data from experimental animals (rats) have shown renal interstitial microhemorrhage after the procedure. Therefore, we developed a porcine model to explore potential renal damage that in situ exposure might cause. Methods. Kidneys from 8 anesthetized pigs were surgically exposed. An ultrasound contrast agent (sulfur hexafluoride) was infused through the femoral vein in a continuous perfusion. Destructive ultrasonic flashes were applied with a high mechanical index over only 1 kidney (the contralateral kidney was used as a control). Blinded histologic and laboratory analyses were performed to reveal any lesions. Results. Histologic analysis of the kidney samples showed no evidence of renal damage. Biochemical parameters that could represent renal tissue damage and hemoglobin levels did not change after the microbubble-ultrasound interaction. Conclusions. The ultrasound contrast agent-ultrasound interaction in anesthetized pig kidneys under the output level for the imaging visualization and microbubble destruction used did not cause tissue damage. Our results suggest that this procedure could be used in humans for regular analysis of the kidney microcirculation with minimal risk of tissue damage.
Palabras clave: Rugosidad superficial, potencia de corte, acacia, sequoia ABSTRACTIn wood machining, the chip formation process consequently brings a change in cutting forces, as well in the specific cutting energy, i.e., finally on the cutting power. Being in practice difficult the measure of cutting forces or the specific energy at the production line, monitoring the electrical output of the power unit is a reality. The aim of this research is to evaluate the change of the mean chip thickness over cutting power and the resulting surface roughness, estimating the specific cutting work on planing process for blackwood and redwood samples. The findings lead to conclude a good correlation between cutting power and chip thickness, requiring the cutting process more power when more feed speed is applied. For the surface roughness, the results presented changes with the chip thickness, and a better surface quality was found with the dense blackwood lumber.
