El teletrabajo se define como la actividad laboral que se desarrolla fuera de las instalaciones de la empresa y con el uso de tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación. La normativa básica parte del Acuerdo Marco Europeo de 2002 sobre el Teletrabajo. En España, el Estatuto de los Trabajadores, recoge desde 2012 en su artículo 13 las características del trabajo a distancia. Los principales riesgos laborales detectados son los ergonómicos, psicosociales y la difícil separación de la vida familiar y laboral, junto con el impacto en contaminación medioambiental por el uso de tecnologías de la información y comunicación. La investigación médica en este tema es escasa y centrada en su uso en personas con limitaciones por discapacidad, edad, situación de embarazo, postparto o lactancia y en epidemias o pandemias. Es necesario adaptar las normas sobre seguridad e higiene en el trabajo a los casos de teletrabajo.
