En esta reseña histórica se trata el tema de la peste que segó la vida de miles de atenienses entre los años 430-426 a.C. entre ellas la del estadista Pericles. El historiógrafo Tucídides narra en algunos pasajes un episodio que vivió y padeció en primera persona. Parece ser una epidemia atribuida a la bacteria Salmonella enterica. En este breve paseo por una etapa de la Historia de Grecia, Tucídides intuye en sus textos los conceptos de contagio e inmunidad narrando de manera objetiva los signos y síntomas que observó.

En esta reseña, se trata la figura de Dioscórides a través de la tradición literaria de diferentes épocas: en la Edad Media gracias a las escuelas de traductores y al interés de los musulmanes por traducir textos de autores griegos y latinos, más el interés musulmán por la medicina; en los siglos XV y XVI se produce un gran aumento en la tradición literaria de Dioscórides gracias al desarrollo del saber y conocimiento entre todas las clases sociales y al aumento de ediciones sobre traducciones de su obra. En Europa y España destacará sobremanera la figura de Andrés Laguna, médico del Papa Julio III quién, aparte de traducir la obra, realizó comentarios para mejorarla. En los siglos XIX y XX se volverán a reeditar ediciones de época moderna y se realizan nuevas traducciones en las que se utilizará la obra clásica realizando transformaciones e innovaciones para mezclar novedad y antigüedad
