El tratado de Andrea Pozzo, Perspectiva Pictorum Architectorum (Roma, 1693-1700), se difundió ampliamente por España y sus dominios de ultramar siendo sus láminas replicadas hasta la saciedad. En este sentido, uno de sus más exitosos diseños fue el retablo de San Luis Gonzaga para la iglesia de San Ignacio de Roma, cuyas resonancias encontramos en altares de Lima, Bogotá, Popayán o Salvador de Bahía asociados a la actividad corporativa de los jesuitas. En Quito, la aparición del modelo tuvo lugar en el crucero de la iglesia de la Compañía donde, además, se fusionó con otro diseño pozzesco de ornamentación mural. El conjunto fue muy aplaudido en la ciudad y enseguida otros templos acogieron con entusiasmo los postulados estéticos de Pozzo ya que suponían un claro revulsivo estilístico con respecto a la tradición anterior.
