RESUMOO Município de Ibimirim, em Pernambuco, está localizado no Semiárido e muitos de seus poços fornecem águas salobras, cujo uso tem sido evitado, em virtude de ensejar doenças humanas (como hipertensão e cálculos renais) e a redução da produtividade agrícola (com depreciação do solo). Propôs-se, no trabalho, avaliar o aproveitamento da água salobra subterrânea e do rejeito da sua dessalinização no cultivo hidropônico de duas variedades de alface (Vera e AF-1743). Avaliaram-se seis níveis de salinidade da água (CEa: 0.2; 1.2; 2.2; 3.2; 4.2 e 5.2 dS m -1 ). As águas foram usadas em todo o processo produtivo (preparo da solução nutritiva e reposição do consumo hídrico). O aumento da salinidade levou à redução linear do crescimento das plantas de alface. As plantas apresentaram clorose generalizada no início do ciclo mas este sintoma não foi detectado na colheita. A variedade 'Vera' teve menor crescimento e rendimento absoluto que a 'AF-1743'. Por outro lado, para ambas as variedades a redução percentual em função da salinidade foi equivalente: o acúmulo de massa fresca da parte aérea foi reduzido à razão de 17,06 e 15,74% (dS m -1 ) -1 para 'Vera' e 'AF-1743', respectivamente.Palavras-chave: salinidade, cultivo sem solo, hortaliças, osmose reversa, irrigação Hydroponic lettuce production with brackish groundwater and desalination waste in Ibimirim, PE, Brazil ABSTRACTIbimirim in Pernambuco is a municipal district located in the Brazilian semiarid region and most of its wells produce brackish water. The use of this water has been avoided since it may cause human diseases (such as hypertension and kidney stones) and crop yield reduction (with soil degradation). The objective of this work was to evaluate the utilization of brackish groundwater and the waste from its desalination for hydroponic production of two lettuce varieties (Vera and AF-1743). Six levels of water salinity (CEa: 0.2, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.2 and 5.2 dS m -1 ) were analyzed. The waters were used in overall production process (to prepare the nutrient solution and to restore the water consumed). The salinity increase caused a linear reduction in the growth lettuce of plants. The plants exhibited general chlorosis at the beginning of the cycle, but this symptom was not verified at the harvest. The variety 'Vera' had a lower absolute growth and yield than the 'AF-1743'. On the other hand, the percent reduction for both varieties was similar -the shoot fresh matter accumulation was decreased by 17.06 and 15.74% (dS m -1 ) -1 for 'Vera' and 'AF-1743', respectively.

Esta pesquisa foi conduzida em casa de vegetação nas condições semiáridas do município de Ibimirim -PE para avaliar a produtividade da cultura da rúcula submetida a diferentes níveis de salinidade em cultivo hidropônico NFT utilizando água salina subterrânea e o rejeito da sua dessalinização. Seis níveis de salinidade da água (CEa: 0,2 1,2; 2,2; 3,2; 4,2; 5,2 dS m -1 ) foram testados. Também foram avaliadas duas fontes de salinidade da água usada no preparo da solução nutritiva: águas artificialmente salinizadas com NaCl e águas naturalmente salobras de origem subterrânea (AS), obtidas de um poço tubular profundo e misturadas com o rejeito de sua dessalinização (osmose reversa). A água dessalinizada foi empregada para reposição das perdas por evapotranspiração (ETc). Não foram registradas diferenças entre as fontes de salinidade sobre o crescimento da rúcula. Por outro lado, o aumento da salinidade da água produziu um efeito negativo sobre a produção e a qualidade do produto. Sintomas de clorose e queima foliar foram verificados. Palavras-chave:Água subterrânea, osmose reversa, salinidade.Rocket production in NFT hydroponic system using brackish water from Brazilian Semiarid region and desalination reject brine ABSTRACT This study was carried out in a greenhouse under the semi-arid conditions of Ibimirim City in Pernambuco State (northeast Brazil) to evaluate rocket yield under different salinity levels in the NFT hydroponics cultivation using saline underground water and the tailing from its desalination. Six levels of water salinity (CEa: 0.2; 1.2; 2.2; 3.2; 4.2; 5.2 dS m -1 ) were studied. Two water salinity sources used in the preparation of the nutritive solution were also evaluated: water artificially salinized with NaCl and brackish groundwater, obtained from a deep tubular well and mixed with its desalination tailing (reverse osmosis). Desalinized water was used to restore the evapotranspiration (ETc) losses. Differences between the salinity sources on rocket growth were not observed. On the other hand, the increase of water salinity produced a negative effect on rocket plants yield and quality. Chlorosis symptoms and burning of leaf edges were observed.

Saline water consumption by plants in most cases affects crops yield in their various stages hampering development and production. The study evaluated rucola (Eruca sativa) water consumption in NFT hydroponic system using saline water. We analyzed six increasing levels of salinity (electrical conductivity), which are: 0.2; 1.2; 2.2; 3.2; 4.2 and 5.2 dS m-1, two salt sources were used, brackish waters (AS) and NaCl. Volume was determined by plant evapotranspiration (VETc) in the system during cultivation. The water consumption during the first days after transplantation decreased with the increase of salinity levels. The amount of water was 250 mL day-1 for treatment without saline water. The water efficiency was reduced revealing a linear decreasing function of salinity occurring in a negative response of plants showing a reduction of sheets number of 3.34%.

A B S T R A C TThe qualitative aspects of water, such as the preparation or replenishment of the nutrient solution, are critical to the success of hydroponic crops. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of "Americana" lettuce (cv. Tainá) under increasing levels of saline stress (0.2 -control, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.2 and 5.2 dS m -1 ), replenishing the evapotranspiration with brackish water in Experiment I and supply water (0.2 dS m -1 ) in Experiment II, both used in the preparation of the nutrient solution. In both experiments, the treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, with six treatments and four replicates. Shoot fresh matter, shoot dry matter and leaf area in Experiment I suffered reductions of 15.22, 12.67 and 15.6% per unit increase of EC, respectively. In Experiment II, reductions of 8.01, 6.90 and 8.14% were observed for the same variables, respectively. In Experiments I and II, linear decrease in water consumption due to the increase in salinity was observed, with reductions of 8.83 and 5.63% for each unit increase of electrical conductivity of water when the evapotranspiration was replenished using brackish and supply water, respectively.Crescimento e consumo hídrico de alface americana cultivada com águas salobras em sistema hidropônico R E S U M O Os aspectos qualitativos da água quanto ao preparo ou reposição da solução nutritiva são fundamentais para o sucesso de cultivos hidropônicos. Portanto, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento da alface americana (cv. Tainá) sob níveis crescentes de estresse salino (0,2 -testemunha, 1,2, 2,2, 3,2, 4,2 e 5,2 dS m -1 ) com reposição da lâmina evapotranspirada usando a água salobra utilizada no preparo da solução no Experimento I ou com água de abastecimento (0,2 dS m -1 ) no Experimento II. Em ambos os experimentos os tratamentos foram distribuídos em um delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso com seis tratamentos e com quatro repetições. As massas fresca e seca da parte aérea e a área foliar no Experimento I sofreram reduções de 15,22, 12,67 e 15,6%, por incremento unitário da condutividade elétrica, respectivamente. No Experimento II foram constatadas reduções de 8,01, 6,90 e 8,14%, para as massas fresca e seca da parte aérea e área foliar, respectivamente. Verificou-se, nos Experimentos I e II, diminuição linear do consumo hídrico em função do aumento da salinidade, com reduções percentuais de 8,83 e 5,63% por incremento unitário da condutividade elétrica da água utilizada no preparo da solução nutritiva, nas resposição com águas salobra e doce, respectivamente.

-Underground water reserves in the semi-arid region of Brazil are stored in the crystal formations that in large part have high concentrations of salt. However, the scarcity of this resource makes the use of this water necessary for various activities, including agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of brackish water on the electrical conductivity and pH of the nutrient solution, and on the production, water consumption and the uptake of nutrients in Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.) under a hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomised, with four replications and six levels of water salinity (0.2, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.2 and 5.2 dS m -1 ), obtained by adding NaCl to the local water supply, with this water being used to prepare the nutrient solution and to make up the volume lost through evapotranspiration. The results showed that with the exception of the treatment at the lowest salinity, there was a tendency to increased electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution with the increasing salinity of the water; that the pH of the nutrient solution remained within the normal range throughout the cycle; that with the increasing salinity of the solution there was a reduction in all growth and production variables under analysis, in water consumption, and in leaf N, K, Ca and Mg, and an increase in leaf concentrations of Na and Cl. It is possible to use brackish water for the production of Chinese cabbage when grown hydroponically as an alternative for those producers who have an available supply of brackish water and a restricted supply of fresh water, however with a reduction in productivity.Key words: Brassica pekinensis L.. Mineral nutrition.RESUMO -As reservas hídricas subterrâneas no Semiárido do Brasil estão armazenadas nas formações cristalinas que apresentam, em grande parte, elevadas concentrações salinas. Entretanto, a escassez do recurso obriga a utilização dessas águas para diversas atividades, inclusive a agricultura. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar o emprego de águas salobras na condutividade elétrica e pH da solução nutritiva, na produção, no consumo hídrico e na extração de nutrientes, por couve chinesa (Brassica pekinensis L.), em sistema hidropônico. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições e seis salinidades da água (0,2; 1,2; 2,2; 3,2; 4,2 e 5,2 dS m -1 ), obtidos pela adição de NaCl na água de abastecimento local, sendo estas águas utilizadas no preparo da solução nutritiva e na reposição do volume evapotranspirado. Verificou-se por meio dos resultados obtidos que, à exceção do tratamento de menor salinidade, nos demais tratamentos houve tendência de aumento da condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva, com o incremento da salinidade da água; o pH da solução nutritiva permaneceu dentro da faixa de normalidade durante todo o ciclo; houve redução de todas as variáveis de crescimento e de rendimento analisadas, do consumo hídrico, dos teores foliares de...
