Leaf-cutting ants are known for their habit of foraging. These habits can be influenced by several factors, including variations in topography, soil, and climate among others. The objective of this research was to study the seasonal activity and foraging preferences of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens piriventris (Santschi). The study was carried out from January to October of 2007 in grasslands of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Nests of A. sexdens piriventris were randomly selected and the forager's activities were recorded. Damaged plant species, soil fertility, and climatic conditions were recorded. The maximum foraging activity in the summer was recorded during periods of darkness or low light (between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.). In autumn and spring, foraging was the highest in the morning, but during winter time the foraging activity was high in the afternoon. Fourteen plant species were frequently visited during our study with the lowest foraging activity being recorded at very low (1 to 4°C) or very high temperatures (above 26°C). The number of exploited plant species was higher in winter (13) than in summer (9). Baccharis trimera (Asteraceae) (43%) and Paspalum spp. (Poaceae) (33%) were the most exploited plants among the identified species.
ABSTRACT. High dilutions may have different biological effects due to the dynamization method and the dilution order used. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the foraging activity of the leafcutter ant Acromyrmex laticeps subjected to high dilution preparations originating from grinding worker ants and developing dilutions at the following dynamizations: 6, 12, and 30 CH (centesimal Hahnemannian dilution order), 5 LM (fifty millesimal Hahnemannian dilution order) and 35 K (Korsakovian dilution order). The preparations were applied daily for 10 days by spraying them on moving ants on tracks close to the anthill. The evaluations included counting the number of ants transporting vegetable fragments on the tracks before each application, after application, and 20 and 30 days after the first application. The high dilution preparations for the 6 and 30 CH and 35 K treatments reduced the foraging activity of the leafcutter ant A. laticeps after 10 applications. The 30 CH treatment showed a higher reduction in the foraging activity of A. laticeps anthills. Prolonged reduction of the foraging activity of A. laticeps anthills was observed 20 days after the first application with the 35 K and 30 CH treatments. Keywords: foraging, non-residual therapies, high dilutions, nosodes.

ABSTRACT. The effect of homeopathic preparations on the activities of the leaf-cutting ants Acromyrmex spp. was studied. A field experiment involving ant nests in six experimental areas was performed using a randomised complete block design. Within each block, every ant nest was considered to represent one repetition. The treatments consisted of the following: Belladonna homeopathic preparations of macerated or triturated Acromyrmex spp. adults, homeopathic preparations of macerated or triturated ant nest fungus (Leucoagaricus gongylophorus) collected from Acromyrmex laticeps and Acromyrmex heyeri nests, a homeopathy Belladonna, and dynamised water. All of the homeopathic treatments were tested at the 30 CH (thirtieth centesimal Hahnemannian) dynamisation. An untreated nest served as the control. The total number of ants from each trail was counted, including both those carrying or not-carrying green plant fragments, immediately before the daily homeopathic applications. All of the tested homeopathic preparations, except for the water, significantly reduced the activity level of Acromyrmex spp. The homeopathic preparations of Belladonna and the macerated nosodes of Acromyrmex spp. reduced the activity level of the ants beginning with the sixth day after the first treatment application; the activity level reduction effect lasted more than 20 days after the last application. Keywords: foraging, non-residual substance, high dilutions, nosodes.
As demais categorias apresentaram valores inferiores a 10 espécies.
Among the major infectious diseases in fish, those caused by zoosporic organisms are important, especially saprolegniasis. These diseases can affect few animals or even the entire population of the production environment. The use of alternative treatments for infectious diseases in aquatic animals has proven to be effective. It prevents the mortality of part of the crop, as well as the contamination of water by chemical components. Within this scenario, the use of plants stands out, mainly unconventional food plants (UFPs). The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extracts of Luffa cylindrica, Xanthosoma sagittifolium and Momordica charantia on the mycelial growth of Saprolegnia spp. The extracts obtained from the maceration of dry and ground leaves were incorporated into the potato agar dextrose (PDA), at concentrations of 0, 5, 15, 25 and 50%. Later, filter paper disks containing the mycelium of Saprolegnia spp. were applied on the agar and incubated at 25°C. Evaluations were performed every 24 hours, for 10 days. In the study, all concentrations of M. charantia extract had an inhibitory action on the mycelial growth in the order of 75% of Saprolegnia spp. and can be considered a promising alternative for controlling this pathogen.
The objective of this paper was to determine the physiological behavior and seed quality of five genotypes of Acca sellowiana regarding desiccation. Seeds were obtained from five plants of urban backyards in the cities of Dois Vizinhos - PR (A1, A2) and Vacaria - RS (A3, A4, A5). The experiment was conducted in a bifactor arrangement (5x3), with five genotypes and three levels of water content (28%, 15% and 5%), arranged into complete randomized block design, with four replicates of 50 seeds each. Seeds were germinated on absorbent paper soaked with water, being kept in BOD chamber under temperature of 25±3°C with photoperiod of 16 hours. Germination percentage, speed index and average time were assessed by counting seeds every two days for 50 days, starting from the moment of radicle emergence. No significant differences were observed for germination percentage and all genotypes surpassing 79% of germination. Desiccation of seeds had low influence on germination speed index and average time of germination, although genotype influence was verified due to genetic variability. Genotype A5 has seeds with superior quality from the others. Acca sellowiana seeds have orthodox behavior.
