O modo como as pessoas processam informação dos mass media é analisado nas fases mais genéricas, considerando a atenção, os factores que afectam a informação em memória e o modo como esta é recuperada e utilizada nas representações sobre sociedade, nas atitudes e nos comportamentos. O papel dos afectos no processamento de informação e no modo como se experienciam as mensagens é também considerado. No global, verifica-se maior esforço na investigação sobre a televisão, uma articulação crescente com modelos e perspectivas provenientes principalmente da Cognição Sociale da Psicologia Cognitiva e um nível heurístico elevado na geração de problemas de investigação.
